I've asked about getting a Canon Extender 2X for my Canon EF 70-200mm F/4L and the response I keep hearing is how much of deterioration it will cause. I finally thought I'd try it and I'm surprised just how good the photos are coming in. I am not able to get AF from the viewfinder, but I am able to get AF from the Live-view and it works fine.
Here are some photos I took of a duck family that visit each year around this time of the year. The photos were shot at full 400mm (200mm x 2). I think the photos are pretty sharp and I was able to shoot them at a fairly fast shutter speed and good F-stop even though it was sunny with an ISO of 400. Also, even though the lens is really heavy now, I am able to hand-hold while taking these photos. It was a sunny day so I probably would have an issue if it was darker/foggy or later in the day.
All pictures taken at ISO 400, F11, 1/400, focal length 400, hand-held.
