I think the other apple and android apps are much easier to use and portable. I like sky safari which is in the apple and google stores.

Here is my latest from Joshua Tree. You can see even with the core brought out, the rest of the milky way is quite subtle.

Nice shot.

I don't have Apple or a Smart phone (too old and dumb for a smart phone).

I just did some night shots at Temple of the sun and moon in Cathedral valley. But it was a full moon and planned for that. I was testing my overnight camping rig which still needs work because the cold air (22 degrees) made breathing very uncomfortable.

I suspect that summer months are better for milky way and camping so long as I don't spend the days in the 100+ deserts. It could be an in and out.

My 11-24 will make a great albeit slow night lens. The wide angle allows longer exposures without star motion and also better dof than my now sold f2.8 lenses.
