p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon 28-70 2.8D vs Tamron 24-70

I recently started shooting weddings as a second shooter. I currently shoot only with primes. I've been debating getting the tamron 24-70 or the Nikon 28-70 2.8D. Is worth to save more to get a tamron or will the nikon suffice? My main concern is focusing. Do anybody have experience with both and could enlighten me on pro/cons?

I own both. The Tamron is ok, especially if you are working with a budget. The Nikon is far superior with focusing, sharpness and overall durability. If you can swing the extra money, go for the Nikon.

I think you missed that he is referring to the older Nikon 28-70 f/2.8D (discontinued ~ $700 used), and not the 24-70 f/2.8 AI-S, there is a difference.

In this case, the Tamron is the more expensive lens of the two.

I don't know much about either lens, so I'll refrain from giving opinions.

Yeah, I completely overlooked that part, hah! In that case, the Tamron is probably the better choice.

I have owned the Nikon 28-70 autofocus version twice over the years.

Awesome lens

The second one had its motor crap out on me.

My only concern would be the age of this lineup of glass.

Still it sold "as is" for more than $400 when I was shifting to Leica and needed the cash

I shoot primes and have the 28-70D for my assistant.

It's a fine lens, it's 95% as good as the newer 24-70 if you don't need the extra 4mm, which is unlikely at a wedding.
AF is definitely better than on my primes.

I can't comment on the the Tamron, I don't own it.

I own the 28-70, and the autofocus, in my experience, is as good as my 70-200VRII for wedding stuff. It's sharp, contrasty, and more than adequate for wedding work. Save your money and buy the 28-70 unless you need VR.

I can't speak for the Tamron as I've never owned one but I've used the 28-70 2.8 for weddings for the last 8 years and it's probably the last lens I'd get rid of. Sharp, contrasty, and tough as nails. I can't tell you how many times I've banged that lens on tables, chairs, and doorways and never had a problem.

Can anyone speak on the noise? Is it noisy?

Noise of the 28-70? You wouldn't notice it while shooting. I've never had a complaint from it, and Doonie is right, the beast really feels indestructible. I have dropped mine and banged it up good, and it hasn't even scratched the coating.

Thank you JMDobson and FM'ers. I am going to get a Nikon 28-70. I can use the savings and buy me a 70-200 afterwards.

That VR is nice on the Tamron, though.

I had both. On 28-70 I did miss the extra 4mm. And with the hood it was a monster.
Tamron is more compact and when it works it is awesome. Unfortunately, I had problems with VC and had to send it for service twice (second time right after it came from service). Now waiting for it to come back again.

Here's an idea...

Rent the Tamron from LensRentals.com for a few days.

http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/nikon/lenses/normal-range/tamron-24-70mm-f2.8-di-vc-for-nikon

LensRental's owner Roger, who posts here on FM from time to time, is VERY honest about the strengths and weaknesses of different gear, even if it means losing business. He would be able to make an informed opinion to compare "The Beast", aka the Nikon 28-70mm.

The difference between 28mm and 24 is actually quite a bit. It never bothered me because I don't like shooting wider than 28mm. The Nikon is a phenomenal lens. I had it, eventually upgraded to the Nikon 24-70, and then went back to the 28-70mm. It is really sharp, ultra fast focus, and it renders colors very beautifully. The 24-70mm was too good and seemed ultra perfect. Something about the 28-70mm really appealed to me. It does flare easily, so that's something to remember if you're shooting with the sun in the shot, otherwise it's pretty easy to control.
