Thanks, Joshua. The Northern Lights shots look very impressive. Thanks for the info.

Ben, thanks for that. I saw that great shot of yours, I like it a lot. Unfortunately, I really like those dark shots that show the fine details of the milky way as well and would consider using the lens for those. Hence, my initial question how it compares to the Samyang or the Zeiss. I guess, I'll have to wait until somebody who does astrophotography compares them to the new 11-24. Still, thanks for the info guys.

Cris, I think the Ziess 15 f2.8 is the better choice for dark sky shots, Noise is the killer, for me above ISO1600 its fatal so the faster the lens the better. I had a Ziess 15 f2.8 for a while and did some nigth shots, its a great lens. The Samyang 14 f2.8 is also pretty good but has coma and lots of distortion. Even at f2.8 I have to go to ISO3200 and that just kills it for me.

Thanks Jeffrey,
Yes, it was Ubehebe. It was so windy, my tripod wanted to flight away.
From 20 shots, this was the sharpest of them.

Fine image, Fred. Looks like Ubehebe to me. Love that place.

No filter was used. This was a single shot because of the very windy conditions.
Best,
Fred

Ben, thank you. I'm using an a7r and ISO 3200 is OK, but I too prefer ISO 1600 and 2500. The a7s and/or a mount like the Polarie is really the way to go for more serious astrophotography. I have thought about the Zeiss 15mm quite often, but at this point I just don't do enough wide field astrophotography to justify the considerable cost.

I get the impression that this is a fun lens to shoot with.

Anyway, shooting this wide it might be of use to some of you to try DxO ViewPoint out if things get too distorted in the edges / corners.

Hi Fred....

Do you plan to do a review on the 11-24mm f/4L? Not that we need much more persuasion looking at the feedback from everybody, but it wouldn't harm.

Thank you very much, Khurram! They were taken in Iceland at a place called Geysir. This is the main geyser there called "Strokkur", which erupts every 8-10 minutes or so. Shortly before eruption, the water "bubbled up" to form a sizable bulge or dome and it is quite interesting since the color of the water is blue. I had to use a longer lens to get closer to capture that phenomenon though. So, no 11-24mm lens for those shots .

Thanks, Nils! I downloaded the trial version and played with it a little.

I corrected two images taken with 11mm setting that had human "element" in them and it did a good job. LR has a feature that lets you do that and the results are close to be the same but you have to do it manually in LR. The LR results can be adjusted to be close to those of DXO but the DXO can do it automatically and frankly, the resulting image from DXO looks more natural. Up to this point I have hesitated to use a software for that purpose for the "fear" of loosing image quality but I may change my mind . In the nature you can get away without any software correction as long as you don't include any human element close to the edge of your image but sometimes I do that for scale/perspective indication. Leaning lines for architectural shots are close to be considered "normal", as well . Thanks again!

Here is a sample of a "View Point"-corrected image with a "model" close to be the edge. It looks as normal as it could get, I would say. This was originally taken at 11mm but after correction, I venture to guess that the effective focal length after cropping would be somewhere around 15-16mm or so.

Folks, remember to leave a review right here on fredmiranda for the rest of us to enjoy.

Well, to be honest I probably need to show the high praise to my wife, so the more top reviews the better!
