I know this topic has been up here before but i need some input.

How advatagous is VC at those focal lengths? 50mm lenses typically have no image stabilization and I don't mind at all.

Is the Nikon worth the price tag? (Referencing used prices)

I understand that the tamron is a tad sharper wide open. Most of the reason I've seen people go with the Nikon is because it's a Nikon!

I'm just debating whether to pull the trigger on a tamron right now or wait a few weeks saving my pennies for a Nikon. Each has their own pros and cons. I do have a tamron 70-200. Great price for the lens but a bit confusing getting used to the zoom and focus placement. The vc lags when you half press the shutter but works great. Other than those quirks it's a great lens!

I am leaning toward the Nikon because well... It's a Nikon!

Name brand depends on the lens. I had the original Tamron 70-200; it was just as sharp from what I saw when compared to the original Nikon (verson I). Only problem was it was unreliable focus-wise. Same went for the macro lens I had.

For that reason I'd probably lean towards Nikon for whatever lens unless I was able to try/test the Tamron first and had a generous return policy.

You are talking about the 24-70 F2.8 right? The Tamron is everybit as sharp, but the issue I had with it is the amount of focus breathing that drops the longest focal length down to 62mm at portrait distances.

I haven't tested my 70-200mm lens in action though I would like to photograph our schools sporting events. I mainly picked it up for a great price for a wedding I am shooting this summer. When I save the extra cash I probably will pick up the Nikon 70-200. Again, focus breathing on the Tamron 70-200 is evident as well.

I'm using this on a D700 if that makes a difference, but shouldn't.

It depends on what you need it for. If you need it for amazingly quick and accurate AF in low-light conditions, the Tamron doesn't even compare to the Nikon making it a no-brainer. If it's for general use in mostly day-time conditions, the decision would be a bit more difficult.

Yea, I kind of need it to be reliable in low-light this summer. Time to save my pennies for both nikons I guess!

I think the tamron will get me through the summer though.

I can't speak for the Tamron but VC, VR, IS, OIS and so on is extremely useful for any lens. I used to be able to shoot perfectly sharp images at 1/10 on my Sony and a 50mm prime 90% of the time handheld!
Try that with a Canon or Nikon and it's almost impossible.

The Tamron 24~70 f2.8 VC is my every day "walk around" lens. It is always on the camera. The VC is VERY useful. I almost always hand hold. It is extremely sharp at the apertures I use (f11, f13 for seascapes). I really used it a lot this past winter. Here is a typical example: Nikon D800E, Tamron lens, probably at about 24mm, f13 hand held.

Dpreview gives the Tamron their Gold award and that's not lightly given.......
Also they say autofocus slightly slower than Nikon but "far from slow."

I'm also considering the two and leaning toward the Tamron. DXOMark rates the lens highter than the Nikon for some technical aspects............

'Slightly slower'- it doesn't 'snap' into focus and it doesn't track as well as a first party lens, nor does it focus as well in lower light.

Sharp as a tack though, and outside of the onion bokeh that you'll have to shoot around or fix in post, a very fine optic with very useful stabilization.

Yea. I think i'll pick up a tamron. VC can't be argued with, and as a guy on a budget it can't be beat.

I enjoyed my time with it; my main frustration was that the rings turn opposite of Canon, which is a problem you won't have .

yea, what bothers me is the focus and zoom rings are opposite than i'm used to. I may just gaffers tape the focus ring. Don't plan on manual focusing much.

Gave up on the Nikon. My hands are not steady enough anymore for using lenses without VR. Just as happy with the Tamron as I was the Nikon.

I disagree. Yes, it is a hair slower. A hair. It isn't a night and day difference though and there are Nikon lenses that focus slower than the Tamron (ie. the 50mm F1.4)

And that has what to do with the price of tea in China?

The real question is what does the price of tea in china have anything to do with AF speeds? Could you be more specific in your question.

I'm making a specific comparison to the 24-70 tamron and 24-70 nikon. Putting a cheaper 50mm 1.4 comparison in the mix doesn't solve anything, apples to oranges in my book.

How much slower is the Tamron 24-70 than the Nikon 24-70?

Is it really night and day??

Adding the Nikon 50mm F1.4 prime is to put some perspective to it. There are plenty of slower focusing lenses than the Tamron and by no means would I even describe it as slow. Look at it this way, you could say the Tamron was twice as slow to lock focus as the Nikon, but would it really matter if the Nikon focused in .01 seconds and the Tamron focused in .02 seconds. Search online. I think you may even find a review or two that compares the focus speed of both. It isn't a huge difference.
