I was photographing springtails and other small arthropods when I found this, which was something like 12mm long. I struggled to minimise the magnification of my setup by removing part of the extension.

It was on the inner surface of rotten Silver Birch bark. Fortunately, it remained fairly still for me.

I am almost certain it is a larva of a carabid beetle.

EM-1, extension Leitz, Photar 50mm, twin TTL RC flash, one freestanding, hand-held, with some support from the substrate.

Thanks, Brian.

Yes, a first-timer. Even so, I found it twice as I searched the same pieces of bark more than once.

Thanks, Birdie.

It held its head close to the substrate on its left side, until I gave it a gentle prod. To my surprise, it did not run away.

It was not there today. One of the adult carabids, found on the previous day, departed before I could get it to the camera.

Thanks.

It's all relative.

I have some really ugly ones to follow that one.

Whoa, that is scary.
Looks like the bug from Matrix.
You get some very unusual finds Harold.

Cool. Almost like pincher bugs in FL, but they look meaner... More heavy duty and tougher. TFS. Chuck

Very nice shots, Harold, and what a great find.

It's so cool. Have you had it IDed yet? Many bugs ID groups.

Yes, it was strikingly different, something like highly-polished grey leather.

Thanks, Lee.

I have seen many (occasional) dead ones in samples in the past.

Based on experience, I have a good idea of what is out there and which habitats are likely to be rich is species. (Our policy of leaving the far end of the garden semi-wild and leaving logs to rot, is now really paying off). Even so, I am still surprised, and sometime delighted. Seeing them is one thing but not many tolerate strong daylight so you have to be quick to capture images. Framing them at high magnification remains a challenge but dropping down slightly helps to a surprising extent.

Thanks, Kurt.

It is very distinctive and I have seen images but none named so far. I am confident that a specialist would know at least the genus immediately. The problem is the time it takes, and domestic politics loom! I will get a name eventually.

I refuse to have anything to do with Facebook.
