I really enjoyed looking at your images with the Nikon 500 f4 P. Very well done. May I ask, were these taken with just the 500 lens or did you also use a TC?

I am considering getting this same lens myself. Almost all of my lenses are manual focus from Zeiss to vintage Nikkors, so I am not too worried about not having auto focus. Looking for the best reach, color/contrast/sharpness for the value.

Best wishes,

Overall, I am pretty happy with my 600mm f5.6 AIS but those manual focus guys keep posting images from the 500mm f4P which makes me want to own one

I am very pleased with the Nikon 500mmF4P. The lens is very robust, the 3kg weight is not excessive, the autofocus versions all weigh more; however it remains a difficult lens to use by free hand, should a tripod or monopod or at least a support. The pictures I posted are done with 500mm alone and also with TC20EIII modified by me. Even with the TC14 is fine. The only advice that I give to the price .... if you find one in good condition at a reasonable price, it is a bargain. It considers that a figure of around 3000 Euros you can find the AFS version D II, and certainly the autofocus is an advantage... it depends on which photos you need to do. I hope I have satisfied your curiosity. Greetings. Piermario

My vote is also for the Nikon 500mm f4 P., After using a 400mm f3.5 for sometime., I was toggling between 500mm focal length and 600mm.
500mm f4 P plays very well with TC1.4 as well as the semi autofocus TC 1.6 (see examples)

These are very nice images! Are these with the TC 1,6?
Thank you for posting these!

Thank you. These are indeed with the modified TC 1.6. These are shot at f5.6., even wide open results are good at closer distances.

Another satisfied owner of a 600mm 5.6 here, very portable considering the focal length, I'll try to get samples up this week.

I've not been impressed with sample images from the 500P every time I try to buy one - they lack clarity and sharpness at any appreciable distance. However I have seen a lot of nice images from this lens so it could just be copy variation.

The 600/5.6 ED-IF is very interesting to me - please post images when you get a chance.

Agree with Curtis and Cadaver.
The 500/4 P is an excellent tele and it is not 3-5 times less sharper/good than the newer very expensive AF versions. Additionally, the 500/4 P manages better TCs than the 600/5.6, at least for my N=1 vs. N=1 copies.
Take a look at this thread about using the 500/4 P + a modified TC16A:
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3121174

Perhaps that can be helpful to you.

good luck.

The 600mm f/5.6 EDIF (MF) does quite well with a TC16A modified for use on modern cameras.

Just a thought, you can get a used older 80-400/VR within your budget. It's a proven and very useful lens.

Order the new Nikkor 200-500. No, it's not as portable as the 400/5.6 or the 300/4, but it's a whole lot easier to carry around than the 500/4 (I know, because I've owned two versions of the 500/4, a manual focus version and an AF version; they were good, but little, if any, sharper than my 200-500). I also now use a Nikkor 600/4; very sharp, quite heavy, one stop faster than the 200-500, but only a bit sharper than the 200-500. The 200-500 is also more flexible than using a single focal-length lens. I'm extremely happy with the copy I have. Gregg
