You also have to remember that the IS gives you 4 stops on the 100-400 ii, that is quite impressive. Also I wonder if the autofocus of a 300 2.8 with 1.4 tele will be as fast as the 100-400 ii (I doubt it, but I don't have the 300 2.8 combo) based on my experience with tele converters... The close focus distance of the 100-400 ii is also great, even if you mostly shoot far subjects, its still good to have the option just in case your subject gets really close to you.

More great points!
I will try the 300 with 1.4 this weekend. If not thrilled I may be posting a lens Sunday :-))
Thank you,
Greg

What PetKal said. It's the best advice you've received on here.

The new 100-400 II is a joy to use. My 300 f2.8 has IS, and even THAT has been sitting in the closet since I picked up the new 100-400.

Unless you really need the f2.8 or f4 apertures, the new 100-400 is plenty sharp, has a fantastic stabilizer, focuses plenty fast for nearly any application and has a nice zoom range. It's also easier to carry around.

Depending on the camera used it can take a Canon 1.4x very nicely as well.

The f5.6 to f11 range is used more often than you might think. If you pay attention you'll see many fine photographers stopping their fast lenses down to f8 and smaller to achieve more depth of field in plenty of their shots. In average daytime lighting f5.6 and f8 can give you miles and miles of usability.

Also, never underestimate the usefulness of a good stabilizer. Canon's stabilizer on the new zoom is simply amazing.
