Hi,
Just a quick note since I know there is great interest in this new lens:
I just tried the new lens on a 1dx and compared it to my old one.
I am not showing any pictures yet, since the test was very fast and I want to duplicate it.
At 400, the 11 is significantly sharper and has more contrast than 1. At 200mm the differences are considerably less. They were both shot wide open, with IS 1 on (hand held).

What shutter speed did you use for the 400mm test? Based on test results I've seen the difference at 400 is actually less than 100-200, except for the corners, so I suspect you might have been seeing the improvements in IS more than optics. Either way that's a valid outcome for the conditions you used, I was just curious.

I have a good copy of the version 1 that's only 2 years old so I don't plan to upgrade yet, but that does look like an impressive piece of kit!

I have both, and used the old one for quite a while. Some differences I see:

1. While I actually like the push-pull mechanism of the old lens, the rotating zoom system on the new lens seems more solid.

2. The IS is much improved on the new lens.

3. Overall the new lens is significantly sharper if you do critical work. The difference is less noticeable at smaller apertures and much more noticeable wide open.

4. I wish the new lens showed less vignetting at the largest aperture.

5. The new lens is sharper at the long end.

6. I'm not a big fan of the new foot design, though I understand they did it. I replaced mine with an RRS product.

7. Hood has a sliding opening for adjusting a circular polarizer. I don't mind this, but it does open up on its own quite a bit. Other than that, I'm happy with the hood.

8. I agree with the assessment of faster and more accurate AF.

If you already have the original lens, while the new one is better it would make sense to ask how significant that improvements will be for your photography. They are significant enough for mine, but your mileage may vary. If you don't have either and you can afford version II... get it.

A few of these comments were added later, to reflect later posts.

Dan

What Dan said. Plus, the Mk II has faster AF, weather sealing, and a "hatch" in the hood to allow you to turn a CP filter with your finger tips while the hood is on.

The AF and weather sealing are great, but I haven't had much joy with the hatch, and so I'm switching back to a generic old-style hood. I sold my Mk I a few weeks ago, along with two hoods.

P.S. it's Mk I and Mk II (Roman numerals), not Mk 1 and Mk 11 (Mk eleven).

I remember someone saying that the long end of Mk I is actually something like 385 mm, not 400 mm. Any comment on that when you compare Mk I and MK II?

Here are 2 non-scientific comparisons. Each is a 100 percent crop.
All are taken f 5.6. The shutter speed for the tree was 1/640 and the pole were 1/2000 and 1/2500.
I hope this gives some more info. My 1 version is about 7 years old and all photos were converted in capture one 8 with nothing done to them. Neither lens has any af adjustments.
sorry I don't know how to upload the images.

Hi fred,

There are two ways to upload: (i) pay the Upload and Sell fee, and you can upload them to FM; or (ii) post them on an image hosting site and post the link in your message. It's explained in the FAQ pages, under Image Upload.

My white hood stopped fitting right after 2-3 outings with the lens.
Now I've been using the one Harold had recommended, and so far so good.

You know you're not supposed to wear white after September, right ?

That is why I pitched the white hood into garbage.
Here's the link for the one I use now:

Looks nice, Peter, but it's a little too expensive for my taste.

After nearly losing my mind with the original hood with the little window that never stays closed, I order this one and have had zero issues after a couple of months.

At first, the fit was a bit tight, but after a few attach/remove cycles, the thing broke in nicely and now it fits like any OEM Canon friction-fit hood.... i.e. the old style w/o the button.

This lens' OEM hood is now back in the OEM box for if/when I ever sell it..... although the way its working out, this thing is so good it will likely be one of my heirs selling it.

OP: There is no comparison on this lens Ver 1 versus II. The 1 to me was always substandard IQ-wise. I tried several over the years and sold them all and went back to the 400 5.6L for hand-holdable 400. I know many think its OK but I'm just picky, I guess. The Version 2, OTOH, is among the best zooms ever made in these FLs and rivals/matches primes in IQ. For the first time in 20 years, I'm considering selling my 400 5.6L.

Anyone know of reports whether Canon fixed the previous <supposed> bounce-back from sensor on the original version when using filters on the front? I've only used filters on my original in times of need, which as been rare. But I recall seeing comparisons of with and without UV filter and the unsharpness the filter produced. Hopefully this is no longer an issue with the new optical design.

Jim, after the very initial batch of test shots, I have had a B+W protective filter on my 100-400 MkII, and the lens IQ is as good as expected. All of my shots in the fololowing thread are obtained with the lens filtered, and they are sufficiently sharp IMO. https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1353190/0

Where I expect we might see some effect taking place on the lens IQ is when mounting a CP on it. I have not had a chance yet to test that, need some good light and milder weather for it..

I like this hood. It is for the old 70-200/2.8 IS. It is a bit more compact and the petal shape makes it easier to mount/remove with my arthritic hand

I traded Mark I for II. One of the best features is closer focusing and you can actually push/pull. Handy if the lens cover is inverted. Plus one for better sharpness.
