Hey everyone!

I’ve just done simple review of the Sigma 180mm 2.8 Macro lens. I’ve owned the lens for about 3 months now and thought I’d share my thoughts on this great macro lens.
Went to Melbourne zoo with it on the weekend, here’s a couple of shots from the day.

Snake Eye, shot at f3.5 iso 10,000

Butterfly, shot at f5 iso 1600.

Great lens. That's a useful working distance.

Personally, I wouldn't pay for an f2.8 lens, preferring smaller and lighter, although 180mm is a pretty ideal all-round macro and close-up FL.

86mm? Of all the lenses I have had over several decades, I have never owned one that took that size.

Harold,

Indeed many will prefer a lighter weight option. I also use a nifty Siggy 70mm 2.8 macro. All the 180 lens shots are from the 70mm. Yeh, the 86mm thread is sure ridicules!

Great review! I love the images. They are outstanding.

Do you find it easy to use the 180 handheld on a full frame body without OS? I'm on the fence between a Tamron 180 (no os) or Sigma 150 (no os) for this reason alone as I mainly shoot handheld. Primary use will be for Macro at close to 1:1 distance but would also use as a portrait/outdoor zoom occasionally.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks!

mlanski, the Sigma 180 is pretty heavy as i said in the review. But the Tamron is significantly lighter, so you may be able to shoot with that all day. For me the OS really make a difference. I would say the 150 OD would be a nicer lens with better AF than the Tamron.
