Some shots from my daughter's Presidents Day Tournament in Omaha. Crappy lighting, crappy vantage points......in other words, normal volleyball. C&C always appreciated.

Nice action! Color balance varies, warm to cool . Different times, or locations? Some great expressions from the young ladies! Mike

Thanks for your comments Mike. Yes, these were taken in two different gyms, each possessing split, multiple, unique and cycling lighting personalities. My approach to dealing with this has been not to deal with it.

Hey Larry

I like the intensity of emotions on the girls faces. The expression of the girl in #3 is priceless.

I'm looking forward to shooting beach CW100. Only 3 more months until summer up here.

Thanks Terry. You know that you have ruined me forever by letting me try your 300 mm. I constantly feel focal length and financially challenged these days.

I love your photos :-)

Girls faces are telling how much they love the game and you show that for us.

Tip of the day: Adjust your WB manually with a peace of white paper before your start shooting.

Thanks very much Yucca and Gerry. I vow to try improving my WB/CB efforts in 2015 although I still stubbornly contend that cycling lights make this largely futile. True?

The gyms I shot in were horrible, dark, cycling lights no room etc.... Even the good venues were bad. Your shots are definitely great, you capture the peak action with good colors! I had some of the team mothers help me make an album for the coaches when my daughter played, it was a blast we had about 500 really good shots of the kids to use. It is amazing how good you can become once you know the tendency of player, it also helps once the kids are older than 13 and understand the game. I also made a DVD with about 200 shots with music :-), just let the kids pick the music. Gerry

Post processing is the answer to your WB/CB situation. I use Lightroom, there are many other options, including Canon DPP which comes with your camera. There is a learning curve, but processing your images can make a huge difference! Good luck, Mike

I was at that tournament also. Yours look pretty good, a perfect WB nearly impossible there. The second facility was even worse, cave-like, but did have fluorescent lights.

Larry, #15 yours?

You'll never WB the entire photo with the zone sodium vapors, so just WB the players and call it a day.

Volleyball to me is the most difficult sport to shoot. Unless you're shooting pro beach then chances are lighting will be as you say "crappy"... You did a great job getting some floor shots and some at the top of the net. I like all of the different facial expressions you managed to capture. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Gerry, Mike, Jeff, John, Patty, and Ted.

I just shot my 13 year old daughter this weekend in tropical Fargo, ND. ISO 20000 and the ugliest color balance I've ever seen. This pursuit is not for the squeamish or sane. If I didn't love the sport and my daughters, the camera would never leave the bag.

Oh, and #5 is mine John. She just wasn't expressive enough that weekend to make the cut.

Perhaps we'll see each other on the court, my daughter is also U17, Northern Lights Juniors.

You can only do so much in processing with poor lighting like this, and I'd say you did a great job considering how tough it is to shoot volleyball.

Nice work!!
