I am looking for a lens for a 1960s Praktica. I would like to get hold of a good (even high) quality lens that would have been used on one of these cameras at that time. Any suggestions?

Your standard lens would be a Carl Zeiss Jena Tessar 50 2.8. I'm not quite sure whether the aluminium or the zebra look would be correct for the 60s, probably depends on exaxtly when in the 60s.

Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 50 1.8 (Zebra Version) would be a high quality lens for the camera.

A high quality tele would be

the Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 135 f4

Carl Zeiss 75/1.5 Biotar. A lens with great character!

Whoops, this lens came in Exakta and m42 mounts.
Sorry, not the mount you want.

Well, a 1960s Praktica should have M42 mount. The 75 mm Biotar is a sought after collectible and ridiculously expensive. The design is pre-War … I think the Pancolar would be more period-correct if that is the aim.

Edit:
Check that, m42 mount is what you want.
Excellent for outdoor portraits with swirly bokeh.
Love my copy. Yes, they are expensive.

M42 screw mount.. You can get tons of decent lenses for cheap. About 10 years ago I bought a 1960's Praktica that was new old stock as a gift. Full box set, everything brand new. My wife still has the camera, she uses it every so often. I forget the lens it came with, but I've since bought about 10 lenses for that system. All very reasonably priced, some actually shockingly good quality. Don't know what's what now, as I'm not in Singapore to go check the lenses. But I think three or four of them are Zeiss lenses (not bad stuff).

The Helios 40-2 copy of the Biotar. Bit heavy though.

Helios, smc/super takumar, some of the multi coated yashicas, jupiter, Industar, Mir, Tair, Pentacon, meyer orestor gorlitz, the list goes on.

Any of these mentioned in this thread are good lenses that will work as long as they are m42 mount. But there is literally a plethora of different m42 lenses. Personally, Id get one made pre-1975.

Someone mentioned Zeiss "zebra" lenses. Meyer Optik also made "zebra" lenses. Meyer and Zeiss were highly competitive. After WWII, Meyer-Optik was renamed VEB Optisch-Feinmechanische Werke Görlitz as part of the planned Soviet economy. VEB Optisch-Feinmechanische Werke Görlitz was merged in 1964 with VEB Pentacon and VEB Carl Zeiss. So both Meyer and Zeiss were very closely related at one point.

Heres a blog with some good m42s listed/reviewed -
