I've owned all of them* except for the 70-200/2.8L. The 70-200/2.8L IS is a fine lens. Like all of them, it has excellent sharpness in the center. For many (maybe most) photo situations, that's sufficient. The added utility of IS is why I went to that lens, instead of the non-IS version, when I wanted faster AF than the 80-200/2.8L (MDP) offered.

I think the 70-200/2.8L IS would be an excellent choice for the dog action and occasional portrait photos that you described in the OP. Plus, most other stuff.
