p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Looking for a 24/2.8 AF-D replacement.

Hello,

I have a D800 and I use a 24/2.8 AF-D for wide angle landscapes. I generally crop the image to 2.7:1 ratio. Here are some examples:

Most of the time, a high quality CPL filter is attached.

I realized that, I use 24mm a lot while I'm hiking. But, I'm not really happy with the results. The edges are not sharp to my eyes.

I'm looking for a better wide angle lens. I'm considering zeiss 21/2.8, voigtlander 20/3.5 color skopar, Nikon 20/1.8 AF-S...

I like manual lenses. I have two other voigtlander lenses (40/2 and 58/1.4) and I'm really happy with their performance. I'll be using this wide lens just for landscapes (mostly @ f/8). Zeiss is expensive. Nikon is AF and plastic, G lens. I'm not a pro so enjoying the gear is important. I'm really confused. Anyone can recommend me a cheap wide angle which performs better than 24mm AF-D @f/8 ?

great shots...

I've got the 21 ZF.2, I know you mentioned it's expensive for your budget, but I can highly recommend it.

have you considered a good older AIS 24mm f2.0 or other comparable focal length MF lens? I can't comment on their performance because I haven't had experience with that one specificaly, but if you like MF, it could be just the ticket for you and save you some money. hopefully someone can chime in on their real life performance aspect...

And the rumoured new Nikon 24/1.8 AF-S
I'm in the same boat as you, I think a bit of patience is required to see some results from and reviews of the new Sigma and Nikon 24mm releases.

I'll be looking sample pics of AIS 24mm f2.0. They say it is better than f2.8 wide open but I generally use it @f/8. Thanks for your comment.

If it is going to like the other ART lenses, I'll definitely consider it. Cannot be more expensive than zeiss.

I was unaware of rumors and future releases. Waiting is logical thing to do now. I wish to have a pancake wide angle lens which is sharp at around @f/8. I was going to buy the voigtlander 20/3.5 but heard that corner sharpness is not satisfying.

Thanks for your advises and comments.

I second the Zeiss 21 2.8 but it's quite expensive. If you don't mind a little longer then I would take a look at the Nikon 28 1.8g. Another good budget UWA is the Tamron 17-35 2.8-4. Sorry but I haven't tried the 20 1.8g nor the voigtlander.

The f/1.8 20 mm is cheap, good, and lightweight. The nice long throw makes it easy to focus manually. Alas, it's not shaped like a pancake at all.

Tag-scribe for the answers.

I have the 18/2.8D and 35/1.4G, and need to fill the gap. A 24 would fit beautifully, but the 24/1.4G just does't resonate with me.

What is this rumor of a 24/1.8G, this is the first I have heard of that, but it sounds very good.

I might have the solution for you. . .

I got the Zeiss ZF 25/2.8 and it is awesome! I'm really impressed with the imaging, and I've owned the ZE 21.2.8 and ZE 35/2 in the past. It's not too big and heavy, unlike the ZF 21/2.8. Used price is good too, around $500-600.

All scenes shot without CPL, PP in LR.5.7.

You want manual focus, built like a tank, has excellent IQ and affordable? Nikon 28mm 2.8 AIS! (and make sure you get the AIS version not AI). About $200 used and $500 brand new. Nikon still makes it and that should tell you something I know it's not a 24mm but I think you should really give it a try. I've owned the 24 2.8D and hated it because it flared too much. This 28 2.8 AIS is a world of difference. It is my preferred landscape lens now, even over the 20 1.8G that I also have.

Here are some of my shots with it:

Yes, I agree for its quality and imaging, but that is heading up toward ZF.2 21/.28 prices, and the OP seems to want to keep it down a bit lower for financial commitment. I think the 25/2.8 is a little smaller and lighter too, which is something I appreciate.

the problem you'll run into with G and AFS lenses like the 20 1.8 is that while great optically, the MF feel and action of it will suck compared to a real MF lens. they're not made for high qualify MF, so if you prefer MF, and you're looking for a lens to use ONLY in MF, I'd personally steer away from the AFS and G lenses.

if I were in your shoes I'd suggest saving up some for a 21 ZF.2, or 25 ZF2...if that wasn't an option I'd look at AIS lenses. both will give significant improvement in MF form and function over any AF lens.

A used Zeiss 21 isn't that bad. Excellent lens very sharp nice PPP. Definitely one of my all time favorite lenses. Like others mentioned there is a new art 24 coming.

You could also look at the rokinon 24. I have no experience with any lense other than the 14 but the 14 was very very good.

Thanks for the responses and suggestions. Looks like I have to wait and see.

Candidates:

Zeiss 21/2.8 --> I have to work extra and save money. I have seen used prices around $1300. They were the older no-chip model though.

Zeiss 25/2 --> This looks like a special lens. It is macro-ish. This can be super nice for creative photo taking. I understood that it is not as sharp as 21/2.8. I could find used copies which sell around $800. Still not cheap.

Nikon 20/1.8g --> Price is tempting. IQ competes with zeiss 21/2.8. I don't really need a fast lens. I don't need AF. If I buy it and don't like it, I can easily sell it.

Rumored Nikon 24/1.8 --> Similar to Nikon 20/1.8g.

Rumored Sigma 24mm ART --> Again. AF lens. :/

Older AI-S lenses --> I can try the 24/2 AI-S. But, I don't think, it is going to be any different than 24/2.8 @f/8. 28/2.8 is getting narrower.

Seems like, I want a Zeiss 21/2.8 but I cannot afford it
