What is the special about this sensor which makes it the sensor of the flagship D4s and the sensor of the classic Df?
Is it a speed performance barrier in the case of the D4s? so when you go to the D3x you lose the 10 FPS?
Any thoughts?
Thanks

I have never owned one but I am pretty sure the reason you stated is correct. The speed and how it can handle noise.
Currently with higher MP it gets slower and more noise per pixel

So slow down the speed to less than half and double the Resolution with increased noise and walla....
Here is the D800......
Than give up some Res and gain some speed now the D750 is born....
By the time we buy/try/sell the D800 and the D750 we could use the money to buy
the real one. Sounds frustrating.

Assuming everyone wants the same thing?

OP? And what is the Point of your question?

As for me, 36mp is the Ultimate Classic sensor, I can't imagine shooting with less mega pixels than that.

As stated not everyone wants the same thing. I never feel the need to have over 5fps and I rarely shoot over 6400 iso. I am very happy with 36MP and amazing DR

A few years back a lot of people were happy with 12 mp, 6 fps, and IQ at those specs. Now I'm happy with the classic sensor in my D750 which gives me double the pixels, a bit more fps, and IQ that's top of the line.

"Classic" is a moving target that also varies according to one's needs / wants.

For me somewhere around 12-16MP is where scanned 35mm film kind of ran out of resolution. It's also a great all-around amount of MP to use for an image. Though I have the 36MP of goodness in my D800 I've found that the 16MP of my m43 GX7 is just fine for 90% of what I shoot. 12MP was not quite enough (especially with a heavy AA filter).

I think 16MP is The sweet spot. It might even be 20MP. But the flagship body sensors always delivered something so sweet and creamy in the IQ side of things. I agree with what was mentioned about 12MP. It just didn't have that balance which to me, was too much on the creamy side of things. I think I'm getting a sweet tooth tonight.

This mirrors my experience: 12MP wasn't enough, 36MP is good for most projects, and 16MP(on my Fujifilm X) is great considering it's portability.

24MP is the sweet spot for me. I only print up to A2, mostly A3 and occasionally A1. 36mp is nice for those who love to crop often. I very rarely crop on my D3X since I compose on the viewfinder and not after the shot is taken.

I think you have to consider the audience the D4 is targeted for. D4 shooters arent usually out taking landscapes to print 3ft wide, at least not with the D4. The D4 files usually end up in print or as smaller photos under 16" on the long end. Additionally, photojournalism and sports demands so many frames be taken, nobody would have the memory card space to shoot 36mp!

For the same amount of money, you could skip the D4 all together and go medium format if resolution is what you're after.

36mp in my D800 is sweet, 12mp in my D700 still works well though

12mp is the "ultimate classic" because of the D300, D700, D3, and D3S.

If I would be able to order, it would D710 with D750 sensor in the body of D810. That would make me to sell my D700 right away.

Sensors are our film ... different sensors suit different applications and people. "Classic" is a meaningless title.

Technology is rapidly developing. Soon 60mp is the norm or.classic and then 100 and 120 😀

I took the Df along with me on a big Southwest adventure a year ago, and loved it. Despite being "only" 16 megapixels and having an AA filter, its 12x18" prints look truly gorgeous next to my AA-less 24 and 36 megapixel sensor prints.

In short, I'd say that yes, if you're into "classic" cameras, techniques, and such things, a camera like a DF, especially coupled with some of those fantastic AI-S and Pre-AI lenses, would be a fantastic kit. I certainly plan on buying a whole slew of that stuff when I have a mid-life crisis in the next 5-10 years. :-)
