Hey all

Im a new d750 owner.

I need ( or um want ) to assign my ae/af lock button to auto focus. I figured how to do that in the control , af/ae control menu, but then it shuts off the shutter control button as a af trigger.

Anyone know how i can get both?

99% sure you cannot. Assigning the ae/af disables the shutter AF. Actually all my Nikon's seem to work in this fashion.

Pretty sure the D4 and D4s which I have function the same way with a dedicated AF on button. I use this options for sports, but never paid attention if it actually disables the shutter release AF.

Darn .

Assigning it to the button only won't work with the battery grip for vertical shots

The D750 gives you one or the other. I don't know why anyone would want both to work.

That's what I thought. The whole point of the AF-ON button (AFAIK) is to separate the AF function from the shutter release so they don't overlap especially when tracking with AF-C.

I could be wrong though

I'm confused.

I always used the button to focus and the shutter button to shoot. Just habit. I didnt have to half shutter push. It's just the way I became used to shooting.

So what's the problem? You would still use the back button to focus and the shutter button to shoot.
Plus you would have the option to press back button to focus and hold it, half press shutter button to hold a meter reading, then recompose and shoot.

My experience with the high end bodies D8xx, D4, D3s etc they offer both options to enabled AF-ON with half depression disabled, or with both enabled. Even the venerable D300 has the option for both.

Others may disagree, but I liked / require having both options simultaneous. I'd use the back AF-ON when I'd need to have focus on action and then just full depress to get the shot with no need to worry about half depress and hold which can become a "pain" if you are shooting for hours. What was maddening was when I mapped the AF-ON on the D600 sometimes I'd forget to remap and would end up many OOF shots when the action was off and also when I handed the camera to someone else to shoot.

Call me obsessive about some things.. and why after playing with the D750 many times I have decided it wasn't going to be the camera for me.
