p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Moon Star

Last night driving home around midnight I saw the aurora was out. Not having a new camera yet I decided WTF and grabbed my work 40D to try capture some photos since I haven't shot for myself in over a month. Well, as per usually, the best aurora was going on while driving to this tree. I did capture some aurora but it had weakened considerably by the time I was set up to shoot. After a while of shooting aurora and burning through batteries in the cold I decided to grab one last shot of this tree. I wanted to use the shadow and moon in the this composition. Processed to look natural with exception of the moon star. Which is how the camera captured it. I had taken a longer lens version of the moon properly exposed to 'shop it in like I saw it but I really like how the moon star turned out and feels it adds another element of interest to the image.

Multi image panorama shot in portrait.

A must few on black!

Thanks for looking!

Great shot.
Funny how lately you have gone looking for one thing, but find a great shot which is completely different. In the cold and dark, that takes a lot of experience and patience.

I love the feeling of being out in a snowy field under a bright moon. The glittering snow, which you've captured perfectly, is really special and brings back a lot of memories for me. Utilizing the shadow of the tree was a great idea, as it definitely helps fill out the bottom of the frame and provide some more interest to an otherwise largely barren landscape. I dig it.

That's no moon, it's a... Whenever I can work in a Star Wars reference I do. I love the brighter glimmers in the snow. A snow field under the moon is very peaceful and I feel you have captured that feeling really well here. Love to the a 40D still making great images!

I'd recognize that sunstar anywhere, nice Rokinon shot!

I'm sure your "new camera" you're referring to is a full-frame one, but have you considered the Rokinon 10mm f/2.8? It's even sharper than the 14mm, believe it or not, and with cameras like the 7D mk2 around these days, a crop-sensor camera makes a GREAT night-time b-roll timelapse camera. :-)

Thank you all very much for the comments! I think I missed out again last night on another great aurora show. Around the 3am the radar images where looking incredible...but I didn't feel like crawling out of bed. Also, I hadn't charged my batteries so I couldn't have taken photos if I wanted to. Supposed to be more tonight, according to the ranting and raving of the news, so that means there will be nothing. Every time the news gets involved with aurora predictions it is a dud .

Thank you Matt. To be honest I am done with Canon bodies. Their sensors are really sub par compared to the competition (Sony/Nikon). Even the new 50mp looks to be nothing more then a bloated version of previous sensors. I had a 7D and since it drowned I've been digging through my archives looking for images to process or re-process. I am incredibly surprised how horrible the 7D files are in comparison to the 40D. The noise and banding is really bad. This is common across many Canon bodies. So I will be switching to a Sony A7r. I will use my 14mm til I can afford to get a Canon 24/3.5 TSE II lens. I don't think I would have a need for 10mm. I think the 24mm will suit me for the most part and will shoot a 3-5 shot pano in portrait if I need to get a wider image.
