p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Advice: Canon 100-400 L glass question

Hello Members:
Need advice, I just received a 100-400 L version 1 from a forum member and he is a very upstanding member with stellar feedback. The lens was made in 2000 and is in like brand new condition (mint minus) cosmetically. The internal glass has no fungus, zero dust, no oil etc. Like new ! However there are four tiny spots that I first thought were water spots but turns out they are about 1/2 inch below front element. Upon magnifier loop and bright light they are some sort of glass coating imperfections. The largest being about 4 pencil heads in a oval type shape. I have done much review and most people say imperfections on front glass won't affect images. I took about 25 shots and they look great. Would you keep or return to seller ( he did offer me a return policy) I paid $ 685 shipped to me. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks Charles

OP, check out this link: http://petapixel.com/2011/06/16/how-dust-and-damage-on-lenses-affect-image-quality/

As long as the marks aren't fungus I wouldn't return it. That's a great price for that lens.

Test the lens at all apertures shooting into the sun. As long as you continue to see no interference (sounds like you shouldn't). Keep it and be happy with a great price for a fantastic lens.

Keep it!!! You got it for a dance and some peanuts!!! If it's output is acceptable to great, by all means, it's doing the job it was made to do!!! And if you don't want it, I'll buy it from you to spare the "shame" of sending it back to the original seller...

definitely not fungus, appears to me like a coating blemish. Seller sent me photos taken with lens before I bought it and they are Very sharp ! Inside of barrel has no dust, appears as the day it was made, only four tiny spots as noted in my original post. Thanks for all the replies !
