p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon 14-24mm/16-35mm Distortion @16mm- Comparison

Hi,

For anyone who's interested, I've uploaded full size images from both lenses taken from exactly the same place at the same time on a sturdy (and straight!) tripod with a D800 at 16mm. I changed lenses over without removing the camera from the tripod or moving it at all. There are two photos of each - one exported through DxO with all lens corrections turned-off and the other with all corrections on

14-24mm Without Correction at 16mm
14-24mm With DxO Lens Correction at 16mm

16-35mm Without Correction at 16mm
16-35mm With DxO Correction at 16mm

Hope that helps
Phil

Thanks!
A few seconds work effectively saves a buyer $1,000 if they go that route.

Less distortion is desirable. I used both lenses side by side for about 3 years. For me the additional price is worth it.

1. I avoid correcting distortion whenever possible. Because, correcting distortion usually degrades sharpness. This is why I prefer a lens with less distortion. The less a lens distorts, the higher my chance is to be able to get away without correcting it.

2. I find it hard to compose with distortion correction in mind. Usually every part of the image plays an important part in the composition. Correcting distortion usually throws it off. However, not always it is possible to avoid correcting distortion. The milder the distortion is, the less it disturbs the original composition after correction.

3. After distortion correction, 16-35mm fov is narrower than fov of 14-24mm. This is expected partially because of the higher distortion of 16-35mm.

You do have a point. Comparing side by side, the 16-35mm does lose some width after correction compared to the 14-24mm

I went from using the 14-24mm for a couple of years to using the 16-35mm all the time, but even after correction the distortion sometimes bothers me and now tend to use the 14-24mm more

so, less distortion is desirable, because you dont like to correct distortion in post, but you dont say why distortion bothers you in the first place, that is what I gather from your post.

That is "why"
(it is not meant as an affront

It doesn't bother me in most cases and i don't correct if it doesn't bother me.
However, there are some cases where it can be annoying and hence need to be corrected. Examples include ocean, horizon, buildings or anything where viewer expects to see straight line. The pics OP shared are good examples of where i prefer to have it corrected. Of course, this is subjective and there is no right and wrong in art. However, for my use, i prefer specific tools for specific applications. If i want bent straight lines, I will pick up a fisheye. But will prefer the lines to be straight when i use a non fish eye lens.
