Using the online DOF calculator for a 5D3 at coc .03mm and rounding off, I get the following values.

Note, a level camera at a standing position on a tripod will make virtually everything at ground level further away than the near acceptable sharpness. Near a lower corner might be best to account for field curvature. 10 feet is not hard to estimate. I would probably go to f8 for 24mm.

I suspect we will need to stop down at least to f5.6 just to eliminate vignette, and perhaps more.

11-24 dof

focal length/aperature/focus dist/near/far

11mm f4 10 ft 3 ft inf

16 mm f4 10 ft 4 ft inf

24mm f4 16 ft 8 ft inf

24mm f5.6 12 ft 6 ft inf

Just keep in mind that the DOF calculators are typically based on an 8x10 print size. i.e. the region which they report as being covered by DOF is the region which will look sharp enough in an 8x10 print. So you will be fine as long as you are looking at the images at normal viewing sizes or making small print. However if you look at your 22MPs at 100% pixel level or make large prints then you will find that some parts of the image which are predicted as being in-focus by the DOF calculator are not sharp and look out of focus.

Yes, and you can adjust the coc if you want. But I just wanted to show how much DOF is inherent on these UWA lenses. I typically shoot my 16-35 by a similar method at f8.

I have tried focus stacking and hyperfocal and always get best results with hyperfocal. I also note that sharp corners and near focus trumps infinity sharpness.

Consider a tougher case. Use coc .010 and 24mm f8. Focus at infinity (1000 feet works) and you still get a near focus of only 23 feet.

Hyperfocal for this case is 24 feet which brings the near limit to 12 feet. This is what I would use.

I have the 11-24L on pre-order through B&H. The lens was originally slated to be shipped today but apparently shipments from Canon have been delayed.

I have one preordered also. I was told by Adorama, the soonest is March 6th. I have mine ordered through B&H. Yesterday they told me with it would be in today without question, absolutely. :^)

Mine is at B&H also and I called to change to a faster shipping last Friday I believe. He said he expected it would ship today and arrive Monday. Going to Moab Tuesday.

Have not seen anything yet.

I called and they said that everything they got in (B&H) was sold out. I have next day shipping but don't know if they are sending one to me or not, as they don't know who is getting shipped to. I ordered mine a little while back.

I look forward to reading and seeing what you early-adopters think of this new lens.

I hope to take it with me to Arches/Canyonlands. Then I hope the weather forecast for snow and rain will be wrong and I will get some light.

I plan to take some images there at various settings and post the raws via dropbox.
