p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · ISS Hand-Held with Canon 6D &100-400 II

Just to see what would happen, I attempted to capture the International Space Station (ISS) last night with my 6D & 100-400 II, hand-held. I wasn’t very optimistic, but gave it the ol’ college-try. As you might expect, the results weren’t jaw-dropping, but not bad, considering. In preparation, I set the lens for manual focus with stabilizer mode (Mode 1) on, focal length 400mm, and focus on infinity. The camera was set on manual with ISO 6400, f/5.6, at 1/400 sec. As the ISS flew overhead, I set the drive mode to continuous shooting, panned the thing, and started shooting.

Of the 120 or so frames I captured, there were a few in which the silhouette of the ISS was discernible; most were just a blurry blob. I think my shutter speed was a bit too slow as the images appeared overexposed. So next time, I’ll try a bit faster—should help focus, too.

Anyway, here’s what I got. Nothing monumental, but a worthy first attempt, I think. I also think the results speak well for the stabilization capability of the lens. The first is a 100% crop; the second I enlarged about 400% in PS CS6.

The fact that you can spot that thing, nevermind photograph it, is amazing to me!

Good work.

That's crazy cool.
Many things in astronomy, especially observing with our eyes through a telescope eyepiece, require a little imagination and understanding what we are capturing to fully appreciate it.
This is a great shot.

Thanks, guys. Actually, the ISS is pretty easy to see once you know when & where to look. There are several websites and apps that pinpoint its current and future location.

&

Its normal to get a number of fuzzy shots shooting objects the night sky due to atmospherics even with heavy tripods, fast shutter speeds and crossing all of your fingers, toes, arms, legs and eyes.

I know what you mean, Dave. Then factor in a FF camera camera, heavy lens, and panning an object moving at nearly 5 miles/sec.

Really cool. Love to see someone shoot it with an 800mm Plus 2X converter on a modern crop camera.

Sounds like Jack's getting the bug!

I can see it now, picture it, Jack unloading his new planetary drive equipped astropod & 16 inch reflector and laptop from the back of a rented Range Rover in the middle of the Serengeti this coming weekend.

There's much to be discerned from this one ... looking forward to seeing future efforts.

The scale involved is very thought provoking.

That would be cool. Hand-held panning would be fun to watch.

Fantastic job spotting it, finding it in your viewfinder, and then tracking it well enough to get this photo. In my experience, it usually zooms across the sky in a matter of a few minutes, making this photo all the more impressive.

Also, it serves as a reminder of the kind of telephoto power needed to photography these types of things!

What almost impresses me more than the ISS is the star field you were able to capture with just 1/400 sec exposure.

Do you have really dark skies where you live?

Yes, I do. And this was only an hour after sunset facing West.

Wow. Those are impressive. Guess I'll have to start collecting teleconverters.

I'm going to label this phenomenal. I've photographed the space station once, with a 400/2.8, and stacked teleconverters. It was an exercise in futility but I did capture it.

Knowing what it takes to get the image, I would say that you, your 6D, and your 100-400 II did very well. Nice!

That's tough shooting, congratulations on getting some recognizable results. Things like ISS in low Earth orbit move _fast_; horizon to horizon in less than 10 minutes. It's lit by bright sunlight, which is good, but it's not very big to the camera, which is bad.
All things considered, it was a worthy effort and a decent result. Plus, having a 6D and a 100-400 II should make you smile no matter what you point it at.
