I have a Nikon D700 and looking to upgrade. I have not been doing photography for a while now but might get back into it within the next year or so. What is the hottest and best Nikon body now? TIA

Knowing what type of shooting you do would help people give better advice.

Coming from the D700 the logical upgrade options are: D750, D4S, or D810(D800). It would help a lot to know what you like to shoot.

Unless you need the large pro body and the fastest nikon camera you can count the D4S out. It is the most expensive as well.

It is between the D750 and D810. There is likely a 100 threads on this subject. If money is an issue the D750 is a great camera for the money. If money is not a factor in your decision then you have to look at the pros and cons of both bodies and decide.

Thank you. Just the answer I was needing. I had no idea the D810 is like the D800.

Yes. It's almost exactly like the D800. There is no difference at all in image quality. If you don't shoot a lot of videos, you would be MUCH better off buying a used D800 for half the money, and putting the extra cash into a first class modern lens and a couple of nice lights. That will make a difference where the camera will not.

There is a difference in IQ between the D810 and D800. D810 has no low pass filter allowing for sharper results (In fact if I recall correctly the D800 has both an AA and a OLP filter, both of which the D810 lacks intentionally to yield sharper results). The D810 also has an upgraded AF system, nicer rear screen, amazingly quiet shutter, 5 vs 4 fps, and a base ISO of 64. Granted not all of these things may be relevant to the OP, but the D810 is a nice upgrade to the D800.

Now for someone doing landscapes and studio portraiture, the D800e might be a better deal. A D800e can be had for less than $1500 these days while a D810 costs about $2500 on FM. That's $1000 that can go to glass, tripod, strobes, ect.

Don't know whether the D800E is a good choice for portraiture, or the D810 for that matter (or even the D800)

Though I love the (with the correct shooting technique and lenses) incredible sharpness and detail rendering of those bodies (I have the D800 myself, with lenses like eg the 2/200VR and 2.8/70-200 VRII), I fear that for some portraits (beauty, or at least the for the sitter flattering kind) the ruthless reproduction of pores, wrinkles, facial hair etc. may sometimes prove to be too much.

Sure, special 'portrait' software or simply some Photoshop will help repair the 'damage', but that IMO would kind of defy getting a camera with all those pixels and such detail rendering.

On a side note, the same problem existed in the film days when you did a shoot on a Hasselblad compared to shooting on 35mm, especially on eg Panatomic X under studio lighting. Hasselblad has a solution though, they also sold excellent be it expensive Softar filters .

If you want small/lighter a D750
If you want better on everything and need resolution, D800 used or for more $ the D810. I would go with a used D800

I want great sharpness as well as resolution. I also want good color. My D700 throws red a lot.

As others have suggested here, it seems you may be better off with the D800 or D810 depending on your financial situation.

D800 would be my pick for your needs. I love mine, and it's yielded some great images for me personally and professionally.

I think that statement puts you in the minority. Unless by portraiture you mean high volume of environmental shots (like for engagement sessions, family sessions or maternity shoots) and you don't want to or can't handle the file sizes.

In terms of studio work the added resolution is an absolute bonus for portraiture. I'd be curious to see why you disagree. I'm in no way trying to say the D750 can't take awesome portrait and landscape shots. I love my D750. But for someone doing studio and landscape work the D810 (or even D800e) is the better option, IMHO.

I own D700, and recently shot with D750. My next upgrade will be D750.

OP, do you shoot for money or is it a hobby? Do you print? How large? Do you have a certain budget? What lenses do you have?

Sorry to bombard you with questions but these help in narrowing down your choices

What's wrong with the D700?

Upgrade-itis can be an expensive affliction.

Sounds like the perfect reason for a D810!

There's nothing wrong with the D700 or even a D200 if you look at it like that haha, but I think someone wanting to take advantage of the latest advancements in IQ, AF, etc. after ~7 years is pretty reasonable. Upgrade-itis would be more like upgrading every new release, but it's definitely still a problem . I've been infected a few times for sure.

To answer the OP's question, a D810 is the "no brainer" right now unless you have specific requirements, budget or otherwise. For your stated uses it would be perfect, as well as have the most familiar feel & controls coming from a D700.

D810 would be a very good upgrade. You'll love the resolution, and the higher ISO performance. If the D810 is pricey to you, then a clean used D800 would be a great second choice.
