p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sigma 18-35 on D7000 - autofocus issues?

Hi everyone. I'm in the market for a mid-range zoom for my D7000. I'm sure that this topic has been covered many times here before, but I couldn't find the answer to one of my biggest questions by searching, which is my main reason for making this post: Has anyone experienced autofocus problems with the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 on the D7000? The lensrentals website mentions that this combination has "focus issues", but I haven't been able to find much other useful information about it on the web.

I'm primarily interested in focal lengths between ~17 and 35 mm, which is why I'm considering the Sigma 18-35, but more room on the long end would be fine, too. I'm also looking at the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS and the Nikon 17-55. Price is a consideration, and taken together with the possible AF issues of the Sigma 18-35 on the D7000, I am leaning toward the Sigma 17-50. On the other hand, my understanding is that the Nikon 17-55 has less chromatic aberration on the wide end than the Sigma 17-50, which I would prefer. But it also costs more...

If anyone has experience using two or more of these lenses, I would love to hear your opinions about them. My primary application of the lens would be taking pictures of people indoors (family gatherings, children's birthday parties, etc).

No issues when I used the combo. Freakishly fast and accurate AF,
IQ to die for SOOC. Having f1.8 in a zoom was quite the treat, we
only parted ways for f1.4 "A" primes and the 28 f1.8 Nano to cut
down weight for da grandkid coverage (and for FX/DX flexibility)
Had the Nikon 17-55 as well read: D200/D2Xs/D300/D300s but
sold it for the 17-35 when I went primarily FX (D3/D700) for high
ISO applications (sports/concerts/events)

I use mine heavily indoors in poor light (ISO 1600-3200 @1/60s) with D7000 and it yields many keepers. I did do a -7 AF Fine tune within a day of receiving it as it seemed to back focus but it seems most lenses require about that much on my D7000. Also have a dock but with the amount of keepers I am getting, I feel it's not worth doing. It's really a wonderful lens.

Thank you both for the helpful replies and great images. I'm glad to hear that the Sigma 18-35 works well on the D7000. I wonder if the focus issues are very situation-specific?

Hey Will, I couldn't help but notice that you've got a couple different "bottles" in the bag. Way to be prepared, also variety is the spice of life. I like your style.

Thanks for the input everyone. While I would have loved to have purchased the Sigma 18-35, at the end of the day I decided to save some money and go with a refurbished Sigma 17-50 OS. I am still testing it out but so far I like it. The image quality is definitely good enough for my purposes and the lens feels nice in use.

Minor gripes at this point are the zoom ring is opposite of Nikon (of course it is since it's a Sigma, and I knew this before I bought it... but I thought I would get used to it faster than I am). The zoom ring is also kind of firm (smooth, but firm). And AF-C doesn't seem to work as well as it does with my other lenses. But that's only based on a few shots of my toddler, and I'm not an AF-C expert anyway, so maybe it doesn't mean anything.

Also I was initially surprised that autofocus isn't "silent" as many people seem to imply. The motor itself is extremely quiet, but there is some gear noise or something similar. Overall it is very quiet, but you can hear stuff. No biggie at all for me, just an FYI for anyone considering the lens.

To fix autofocus issue in your camera please follow these steps:
Check that both the lens and the camera switches are both pointing towards Autofocus. On the camera it must be set on AF, not M, and on the lens put it to M/A (A stands for Autofocus and M for Manual, M/A allows you to use both). Flicking the lens switch to Manual can be done unwittingly and fairly easily, especially if you are in a rush to change lenses.
Check that the dial is pointed towards the camera icon and not the L, which stands for lock. You can easily flick this dial, especially if you are back-button focusing and your dial sees so much action.
You can find more tips in Nikon D7000 Manual.
