In searching for a smoking deal on an 80-400mm D lens for my budget wildlife kit, I am seeing the old 300mm f4 prime sell for $500 for a clean copy with a TC. I have heard the AF on this lens is not all that hot, but I just use a single af point and back button if that matters.

Currently shooting with a D7000 and 70-300MM VR. I would think there would be a significant jump in sharpness at 300mm and the ability to put on a TC would also be a plus.

The 70-300mm seems to be the lens I most often use and I bet if I tallied up all my exposures 90% of them would be at 300mm.

Better off with the more "modern" 80-400mm D?

For $500.00 you are looking at the old AF model. I would suggest the AF-S model as it will take Nikon TC's and is definitely faster to focus than the previous version. The prices are coming down with the release of the new 300 f4 VR lens. There is one on the B&S forum right now with a Kirk mount for $850. Don't know the seller but this looks like a good deal to me.

Did not realize it would not take a TC

It will take a Kenko TC because Kenkos have the mechanical linkage for the AF screw.

I agree with DGC though.. for about $350 more, you can get the excellent AF-S version.

Just grab the AF-S version for slightly more money on the used market. Takes all the TC's really well, and focuses extremely fast. There should be lots available when the 300/4 PF is in stock everywhere.

Been there done that...the newer AF-S version is not only fast....I can't even hear it while it's on my camera! You will love it!

If I pay anything close to $800, and add in the cost of TCs we are starting to get too close to the $1069 the Tamron 150-600mm. That would be my first choice, a new, modern lens with VC and a warranty.
I have drawn a line at $700 otherwise I hold out for the Tamron.
