For the first time in weeks, the temperature is not single digit or in the teens. A balmy 35 degrees makes me think of spring.

Right off, I could tone down the beak.

Now that's a beauty Ted! But don't get your hopes up too much...back to the deep freeze tomorrow.

This is a stunner Ted. You are on a role lately.

I just cam in from two hours of shoveling slush and chopping ice. At least Gerald, my teen age sun was out there with me or it would have been 4 hours.

We have water water everywhere and still snow. Tomorrow it will all be ice...

Enjoy the great weather while it lasts, second good day in a row. Yesterday was pleasant as well even though it was snowing at an inch an hour all afternoon. It was WARM!

What treat is next for our eyes Ted?

Toned down or not you nailed it! With cold weather some exquisite birds like this one. I prefer 1 but both are excellent. Well done Ted.

Great shot. Did you restaurateur the first one a tad - it shows more feather detail.

I keep saying I'm a sucker for the Cardinals. I've never noticed a black "eyebrow" above the eye like on this one. This next comment is just a matter of personal taste, but I'd like to see some of the yellowish tint of the green cut back. I just don't think that green shade does well with the red. I'd like it either less yellowish, or tinted more golden and less green as a compliment to the red. For the rest, I think I like #1 best of the two. Very sharp.

I find the first version to have a more natural tone to it, not quite as punchy as the 2nd. The feathers show more detail in the processing of the 1st. Beak highlight as you mention could be toned a bit but it actually doesn't bother me. The background looks smoother and only one tone in the second but I prefer the 1st as again seems more natural to have some of the yellow in it.

I mighty fine shot, the 1DIII gave nice files.

Gives new meaning to the phrase, "Up close and personal"!

These are great, Ted; like others, I prefer the somewhat subtler processing of the first (using the word "subtle" to describe a Northern Cardinal is a bit of an oxymoron). Reds are terrific (so easy to overdo but not overdone here), but I agree that the green BG seems a bit too much light Christmas! (Maybe try a green desat or decreased luminance).

Nice head shot Tedster. #1 has more detail in the blacks below the beak, as well as more detail in the Reds above the beak.
