p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Problem with 70-200 hunting for focus

I shoot most studio portraits with a D800 and a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8. I use a Buff beauty dish with a sock diffuser for the main light. I used to have a real problem with the lens hunting for focus even with a modeling light on. So, I setup a second, rather bright modeling light and it seems to fix the issue. However, in my last two sessions, I had to switch to my 24-70 because the 70-200 was hunting for focus so much and several times never gaining critical focus. It is beginning to be very annoying and frustrating.

This lens focuses fine in almost every situation except for this. Today, I even left the overhead fluorescent lights on and it still hunted for focus quite often.

I'm shooting mostly AF-S Single point, F8, 100 ISO with 1/125th ss.

THanks for any help you might offer.

Does it do the same thing on another body? If so, then back to Nikon.

Have you tried using it elsewhere in a well lit area on AF-S Single point mode on something with contrast where the focus point is?

If it doesn't work elsewhere, send to Nikon.

Just be sure it wasn't one of the following:
- you were on AF-C mode
- switched metering to limited instead of infinity on lens
- VR off at low 1/125 speed
- focusing on a point with no contrast (i.e. solid color with no lines where focus point is)

Good luck.

Try cleaning the contacts...lens AND body.
Mine AF's in caves with the D800.

Is this a new lens to you? Did you by any chance flick a switch on the actual lens?

Because we all have "DUH" moments, is there any chance you're in closer than MFD?

I've had the lens over 2 years. I checked all the settings. Tried AF-C single point and AF-S single point.

I have a friend with a brand new version of this lens and I will compare them at my next session.

Thanks

This was my thought too (as well as VR off)

Does it focus if you open it up wider than f/8?

As my strobes were set for the session, I didn't try anything wider open than 7.1. I often shoot at f8-f11 in the studio with no problems before.
