I got these shots on a walk around the river after work today. I'm still not sure what species this is (Common or Barrows) as this is a first winter bird. The light was fading fast and on the wrong side so two of these are quite backlit.
I welcome any comments and critiques as I did some heavy pushing and pulling for the backlit ones and not sure if they really work. Also the breast is blown on the flapper
1) The only one in decent light
2) The flapper flapping the wrong way
3) The harsh backlight and shadow lift

They are all nice Geoff. I love the pose in 3, but a little fill flash would have helped, (and I have the gear for fill flash but I don't use it as often as I should... ) ~ Ron
Geoff, those backlit shots are always tough and I'm never real happy with the way they look. It's better to work with that backlight as you did in #3 and add some detail to the shadows. You processed that very well IMO and the call and head tilt really make the shot. Nice work.

I do like one the best but am impressed that you tackled the back lit and came away with a more than acceptable image...something's gotta give in those and you made the best of it.
