Hi all,

I'll be heading to Las Vegas March 1st-5th and will hopefully get a chance to get outside the city and do some photography. Just curious, if you had one day to get out of the city for a sunrise, maybe a day hike and a sunset, where would you go? Thanks in advance for your responses.

Mark

Valley of Fire is the closest, most obvious choice.

Trails, neat rock formations, slot canyons, etc.

Death Valley and Zion are both a little over 2 hours' drive.
In DV, hiking and shooting the badlands in the Gower / Golden / Zabriskie triangle would make a superb day adventure. I'm not sure about Zion sunrise this time of year. Maybe someone will chime in.

Mojave Nat. Preserve, about an hour away, qualifies as the "Off the beaten path" option. I don't know much about it, other than the fact that there are some neat areas that are worth visiting.

Have a look at http://www.timeanddate.com/moon/usa/las-vegas and consider chasing the rise and/or set of the moon, which will be full during this time frame.

Red Rock Canyon is the closest place outside of Las Vegas if you want the shortest drive (just west of the Summerlin and the 215).

Plenty of hiking trails. You might see burros or desert turtles. At sunrise and sunset, the red rocks around the area are pretty (but I would say that the Valley of Fire would be prettier), but at least it is very close to Las Vegas.

Awesome thanks for the tips, sounds like Valley of Fire will be where I'll head. Any recommendations of good trails to hike there? I'm in good shape so any length for a day hike is fine.

I have not been to Valley of fire, but I did go to Red Rocks in January and enjoyed it a lot even though it was middle of day.
