p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · X100T/X100S or XT1?

OK so the quick background. I am a wedding and kid photographer. I am fully vested in Fuji now, sold all my Nikon and moved to Fuji a year and a half ago. I am currently shooting with the XT1 and XE2 with the Rokinon 8, 85 and 135 and Fuji 18, 23, 35, 56. Love them all!!!!!! Here is the thing. I have $1kish give or take.... I want a 3rd camera. I would mostly use it for personal and family stuff but it would be in my bag at Weddings and for portrait stuff. I have always wanted one of the X100 cameras. They have always looked awesome and would love to be able to throw a camera in my pocket for on the go. But I also love my XT1 too.

I am just trying to figure out what to get. So I guess I need to ask those of you that have used both the XT1and X100T/S what your thoughts are. Is the X100T/S good enough to be used at weddings and for portrait work? How does it compare in image quality to the XT1? Can I shoot at 1600 and 3200 and get a nice file? I know with my XT1 I can get a nice image at 3200 and even at 6400 if exposed properly.

So if you have $1k or so to throw down, would you go with a second XT1 or get the X100T/S? If I go X100 would you go T or S? Is there that much difference in the T over the S? if not, I would love to save the money and get the S but if the T has features that are that much better then I will get it. Is the image quality the same with the S and T?

lol 1st world problems lol

IQ is quite similar (assuming same focal length) but the XT1 handles much better for serious shooting with more direct controls.

You basically know what the XT1 does and doesn't do well, owning one. The X100s/t handles fine, but its more of a casual camera.

I don't like using mismatching gear for professional work. Same body, different lenses, makes it so much quicker to adjust stuff as needed.

Only real points of the X100s/t I could see are to get the leaf shutter for fast flash sync with strobes (XT1 can do fast and silent E-shutter of course, but no with strobe)

X100 cameras are not small enough to fit in any pockets except for jacket pockets that are above average in side. While these cameras are small, they are not THAT small to be put into a pocket and then forgotten about. They are large enough that their presence will be felt.

When I say pocket I mean jacket pocket. Not pants pocket

Don't all of these use the standard Fuji 16 MP sensor? If you know how your XT1 performs at higher ISO, then you know how the other options work as well.

yes that is true but from my experience in the past with other cameras using the same seniors, there were slight differences in output.

The lens is the only factor in this case and the f/2 lens on all X100 type cameras is known to be a decent, contrasty lens.

ok so now I'm going back and fourth again. lol I really really rely want an x100 camera for personal use. I know i would use it a little at weddings but my xt1 would be used most of the time.

If i got another xt1 i would probably just use the xe2 as my personal camera. but i still like the x100 for some odd reason.... who knows, maybe i will get the x100t and then in april when wedding season gets rolling heavy again i will just grab another xt1 too or if fuji drops a new camera then. who know. lol

You could get the original X100, which has a different (Bayer) sensor. Many here regard this camera highly as it has a very different look than all the X Trans cameras.

I did think of that since it is going between $400 and $500

Yep, that's a pretty good price. I've had the original X100 since nearly day 1. It's been all over the world with me and was my primary traveling camera before I gave up digital to shoot film. I still have it because it's not worth selling at that price.

If the camera is for work I'd get the XT1, for play get the X100?.

If you just want something for fun, old X100 is a pretty good deal. OVF shooting experience is basically the same with all of them, with differences in EVF and LCD sizes on the new models, little more customization etc, but the original isn't a bad camera for current prices

Easier to justify a $500 "fun" camera than it is a $900 or $1300 fun camera

It's also worth noting that while the 23/2 on the X100's is a good lens, it's no match for the 23/1.4, if you are used to the latter, you may be disappointed in the X100's lens.

True, but the 23/1.4 is kind of big and heavy (relatively speaking) and cost as much as the X100s.

Its a great tool mounted on the XT1, but it makes for a quite different shooting/carry experience than walking around with a X100.

I agree with mills, for a fun camera the original x100 at $500 or so is nice to have. Much easier to justify than a $900 x100s or a $1300 x100t.

The x100 series have a few advantages such as a more compact size and the ability to use a leaf shutter for higher sync speeds. But for more professional work I might not use one because of the quirks that it has, including the x100t.

Of course, the OP's already got the 23/1.4, so they'll be used to what they get from it.

Two options I can see here

A) get another xt1 and use the xe2 with 18mm for personal stuff. The xe2 18mm combo (without hood) feels very similar in size to the x100

B) get the x100s or T

If it's for personal fun, get the X100t.

If it's for business I'd get the XT1 as its easier to shoot identical bodies side by side (muscle memory, etc)

In your scenario, it's a head versus heart situation Head=XT1, heart = X100t

And to be totally confusing, I think the best option might just be to save the money now in anticipation of getting an XP-2 later this year !

More options:

1) Wait! You're not going to get anything substantially different out of any of these cameras aside from the original X100. They're all close in size, and image quality is essentially identical if you shoot RAW. The X100-series lens isn't as good, particularly wide open.

Wait for an upgraded Fuji sensor/camera. Save that $1K for something that will actually make a difference. You've already got an X-E2 and X-T1, and together they work for you. Don't blow the cash on something almost the same that will lose all its value in the next few months. You're not without tools right now.

2) Pick up an RX1. That's substantially different, smaller, and better IQ all around... from the lens to the sensor (resolution, DR). AF is worse, but if it's just a personal/fun, blowing the money camera-- perfect!

3) $1K gets you to, or over 2/3 of the way to almost anywhere on the planet by plane. Where you can use your gear...
