p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Rarest bird in Australia

The White-rumped Sandpiper is officially the rarest bird in Australia as there is only one in existence and here it is! The reason? Because this little guy is supposed to fly from Alaska to South America but seems to have gotten on to the wrong flight path and ended up here, possibly accidently attached itself to the flight path of the red-necked stint, similar looking and sized bird, that flies from Alaska to Australia. So, as strange as it may seem, yes you are looking at what is officially the rarest bird in Australia at the moment and has caused quite a stir in the local bird watching community and is getting celebrity status. The last known siting of this bird in Australia was in 1977 near Pitt Town, an outlying suburb of Sydney!

So, I am quite chuffed to have been lucky enough to photograph what is a very rare bird in Australia, kind of like rubbing shoulders with royalty. However, I do feel sorry for the poor little fellow as he must be quite lonely.

Beautiful photos of a down under one of a kind....I can understand your excitement but you didn't let that stand in the way of getting some wonderful pix.

Beautiful work Lance! The colorful pebbles are a great background too!
How sad he is all alone but so amazing he is living that long.
He looks nice and healthy he must be having a good life!

Especially like #1, portrait style. Super sharp, wonderful low angle, great light, and as you say, one of a kind there. Great job.

Wow! Usually something this rare, one would only get a fleeting look at some distance and that's it... but this guy appears fairly tame (well, a lot of shorebirds are). Congratulations!

Thank you very much for your loveyly comment, Herb!

I do like the large images, they fill my screen nicely.

I often wonder about this as I make my images 1200 pixels high to suit my screen which is 2560x1440, but those with older lower res screens may not be able to fit them in. It's a difficult question as to what size to make the image. If it is less resolution, then it looks too small on the newer larger screens and you lose the impact that so many images need when displayed large. I like the image to be as large as possible as it has way more impact.

Huge congrats on the rare visitor, and on this great opportunity you capitalized so very well on Lance.
Wonderful light, color, and detail in the whole set... the sand/pebbles on this beach is a terrific setting for your subject.
All of these are really nice views, and great job getting down low to this eye-level POV.
#1 is my favorite and just a superb view of this White-rumped Sandpiper.
Excellent work and a real pleasure to see.
