p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Resting Oystercatcher, and a Question About Composition

Shot last Thursday at Ft. Desoto. My question is which comp. is preferred? I originally processed this image with the bird to the left of center, but I actually like him better slightly to the right. This one played tricks on me since his face is going one way but his body is facing the other. Opinions? Thanks!

I prefer the first as everything, even the blades of grass are pointing to the right. Both are excellent!

Can you do a third where the bird is half way between the two existing compositions. I would give that a try for several reasons. One, the eye would be at the intersection of thirds, upper left. Second, the right most blade of grass would point to the top right corner. Give it a try and let's see.

Normally we want more room in the direction the birds is facing as in #1. But I like more habitat in #2 and that makes less empty space to the Rt so my vote is #2.

By compositional guidelines you want more space in the direction you subject is looking which calls out the first. The first also has the grass pointing to your subject which is called leading lines in composition so the first is technically good composition. I also like that one best.

I feel you have added a bit too much contrast in post making the brown feathers look too rich. This is a taste issue and for some birds I do this my self.

Very nice sharpness.

The "rules" don't always work Bobby, and in cases like this you will get many opinions. That's when experience comes into play, and you should go with your gut feeling. For me, technically 1 is better, but 2 feels better to me and is my pick ~ Ron

These shots where the bird turns its head backwards are hard to compose. Obviously if he was looking to the left then the 2nd crop would be ideal. I still think that the 2nd one works best even though his head is turned to point to the right. A very nice shot either way.

This is what I was thinking, but isn't it nice to hear so many opinions. Thanks for all of them. Next time I shoot Oystercatchers I'll just make sure they're awake first. Well...maybe not.

Excellent example of a difficult composition, and a great discussion. Between the two I go with #1, and agree with Morris. But the suggestion to put the eye on the upper left "thirds" cross hair would be a compromise between these two examples, and would be interesting to see how it works out.

I'd pick 2. I agree about the head turned 180 comment. This may be a situation where composing in the middle can work too.

I'm with bream on my thoughts.

The eye is looking directly at us not behind he bird, the beak is not showing as a pointer to push our looks behind the bird..........thus perhaps the compromise works on the comp somewhere in-between your posted images

IMO a bit less contrast and a bit less saturation could work too, of course the lessening of contrast will subdue you saturation too
