Has anyone seen pix that would compare IQ of the new Canon 100-400 II vs the Sigma 150-600. The reach would be nice but not if I could get better IQ by cropping

I want to see this comparison too! Done well in both lab and field....

The 100-400 II, which I have, will be a pretty hard act to follow even with 1.4III attached. The obvious upside to the Sigma is having all focus points available at 600 versus the 100-400+1.4 which will only activate the center point.

I was holding out for a 150-600 after renting one but then after seeing the stellar performance of the 100-400 and the Sigma's lack of availability, I went for the Canon. Anecdotally (I say this because I didn't have both lenses at the same time to do a side-by-side), comparing the Canon+1.4 to the Sigma bare, I would predict the advantage goes to the Canon on IQ and the Sigma on AF due to the focus points.

I have both and I give the slight nod in IQ to the Canon, but when I need the extra reach I enjoy having the Sigma. My 1.4 doesn't play too well with either lens, and I generally don't like using it, but I may get the Sigma TC in case I really need the reach along with the dock to keep things up to date.

I'm not sure what I need to do with the Canon 1.4 III. I don't know if it makes more sense to replace it with a new one or send it back to Canon. I haven't checked to see which is more cost effective.

My Canon 1.4 III produces almost imperceptible quality losses with the 100-400 II.... what issues are you having other than the obvious focus-point loss?

On mine (1.4III), MFA requires +18 on my 100-400 + 7DII. Without the TC the same lens requires 0. Similar issues when it is placed on the 5DIII. I have had it(1.4) several years and seldom used it. Something may have happened to it just sitting in the bag for so long. Perhaps it was bumped or something, but I don't get good results with it.

I would definitely have Canon take a look at it. the 1.4III is a superb piece of equipment and works very well with any lens its compatible with....

On my 1D4, the 100-400 requires 0 MFA without the 1.4 and -3 with.... Pretty typical.

Re the 150-600... I don't have a Sigma TC, but I do have a Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 that I used to use with the 70-300L because it was not compatible with the Canon. I tried both on the 150-600 and got better results with the Canon TC..... I was surprised by this....

I had both 1.4 & 2.0 Sigma TC's back when I was using it on Nikon with my Sigma 100-300/4. Switched to Canon and picked up a Canon mount Sigma 100-300/4 ... but went with the Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 ... not the same as using Sigma's dedicated TC.

The Sigma TC "nests" inside the Sigma lens. The Kenko is flat and does not. For general use, the Kenko is compatible with more glass, but the Sigma TC's are mated to glass that can "receive" them.

I haven't tried any MA to either of my 100-400 II and 1.4X IIIs as far as I can tell looking at the results none is needed.

I once had (at the same time, for about 18months)the sigma 120-300mm f2.8 non OS (original one) and canon 300mm f2.8 IS I . Sigma was as good as Canon optically, trust me. AF on sigma was crap even on my then 1dmk2. The newer sigma OS and OS sports models look much better in picture quality as well as AF. I also owned sigma 30mm f1.4 non Art. Now I have used most canon glass except 200mm f2 and the $350 I spent on sigma 30mm f1.4 was the best money I spent. It was as sharp at f1.4 (if not sharper) that 135mm f2 @f2. That says something. I compared to 300mm f2.8 IS and picture quality was similar. This is $350 lens compared to $3500 lens and one of canon's best superteles. I have owned sigma 50mm f1.4 as well as canon 50mm f1.4 and sigma better in everything. Had sigma 85mm f1.4 and 85L II and sigma as good as 85L II. No difference IMHO and sigma focus faster. Now i have (work access) to the Sigma 35mm f1.4 art and 35L and sigma is hair notch better than 35L. So don't ditch sigma. Do they have issues, particularly with AF yes. But good copies are really really good.

I own the 100-400 II and have had a couple of opportunities to play around with the 150-600 Sport, most recently the other day in Costa Rica (where I was co-leading a bird photography workshop). I love the 100-400 II, but I've been very impressed with the sharpness of the 150-600, even wide open. Here are a few 100% RAW file crops taken wide open at 1/250 hand held (default LR processing only).

How responsive is the AF compared to the Canon for BIF

Neither is a speed demon, but the Canon probably has a small edge due to the larger maximum aperture. Both produce sharp flight frames. I didn't get to use the 150-600 for BIF in Costa Rica, but I did at a Bosque workshop I co-led in January. I did shoot some BIF with the 100-400 II in Costa Rica and was overall pleased with the results.

I would welcome the extra FL & $700 dollar saving offered by the Sigma. I just have to find a spare day to travel & test when the local dealer has a copy of each available at the same time..

BirdWhisperer,

What FL were those hummers shot at, and at what distance? Those are amazing 100% crops.

I thought it was a $200 savings (Sigma $1999, Canon $2199).

They were all shot at 600 mm and f/6.3 from a distance of about 15-20 feet. The body was a 1Dx.

In Perth Au the going price for a 100-400 is 2599. A Sigma can be had for $1999 or $1899 depending on who has them in stock. A significant saving if IQ is similar. Respected seller prices.

The close the subject-to-camera distance the harder it is to tell apart on image quality. Just my opinion.

At first I really wasn't a big fan of Northrup but I'm beginning to like his videos more lately.

I'm going with the 100-400 II and will see how my 1.4x TC III does with it. The Tamron and Sigma contemporary are pretty compelling though as light weight 600's.
