Lg is putting in a laser focus into one its smart phones.Works in conjunction with phase contrast, phase detect. It is allot faster as it does not make the back and forth corrections to get the auto focus dialed in.How long before Nikon and Canon come out with it.You could get auto focus in a room we perceive as pitch black.Wedding photographer heaven. Sounds great, except the part where you blind your subject...

I use a bosch laser measure for work and it is + - within 1/64".Makes sense to me for certain situations. Doug M

It doesn't make a lot of sense for system cameras, as in order to make sure that the 'AF laser' clears lenses, it'd have to be situated off-axis, and it'd still have the calibration issue that phase-detection has between what a particular lens is calibrated to at a particular known distance.

Might work for point-and-shoot (and other fixed-lens) cameras, though!

yeah that makes sense.A reason it is in a point and shoot now I guess. But could see how they could eventually work around that.Doug M

If it's using a laser, I'd bet it'd be a range finder laser. Camera knows distance to subject from laser and focuses lens to that distance.

what I was thinking was a through the lens where the laser would bounce off the mirror and calculate from there.Doug M

Hope the lasers from two separate phones don't cross otherwise the world will end.

Just imagine having to remove the bright red dot from your subject's eye lashes. Would the red eye tool work for this?

JK

What we have now works very well though there is always room for improvement

Laser AF is just one form of active AF. It shows up in P&S's every decade or so because it nets you rather fast and accurate AF on the cheap and doing AF on P&S's before the days of fast CDAF was always difficult.

All sorts has been in older cameras before but it never seems to stick eg. Contax T2 had active infrared focusing. I wonder how well laser range finders work at infinity distances?

The Sony DSC-F717 projected a laser pattern for autofocus assist and it was actually pretty excellent for taking flash-assisted pictures in low light. It allowed you to focus in dark situations without blinding your subjects (or calling a ton of attention to yourself) by using an AF assist light.

That was an awesome camera for its time.

I think an F22can lock on 51 targets at one time.Just costs a bit more though

I am sure a laser based focusing system would work well in a cell phone camera system. But, lasers do have issues. A lasers range can vary, based upon such variables as sunlight, atmospheric conditions, target reflectivity. The most powerful lasers now in use, as allowed by law for civilian use, tend to be used on laser range finders often used by hunters. Some models advertise a 1500 yard range, but that is under optimal conditions. Depending on the target, 3 or 400 yards is all they will do reliably.

Lasers used for ranging (or focusing a lens) do not project a visible, solid red dot.

thats pretty dam awesome, for every camera guy would a good camera in a phone is important .I don't really care how fast the autofocus is, but if this really helps to get the focus right in very minimal lighting conditions, it's a good feature indeed.
