Still working on getting a setup to work just like I want. Finally got out and played a little the last couple of weeks. I'm making progress but not quite where I want to be yet.

Each shot used 2 flashes setup near the stump. Both shots were 1/250th first at f10 second at f16. Both shot with a 300mm f/2.8 at about 25ft.

Papa Card coming though

Mama Card flashing some color

I like them. beautiful shots of a beautiful subject.

It would be interesting to see a wide angle of the set-up from behind the photographer.

#1 has a bit of a ghosting feel to the wings, but #2 is very cool.

Agree with the comment above me about the ghosting in the wings for the first image. #2 is spectacular however. Really makes the Cardinal look like a giant -- very unique perspective.

Thank you all... Yes the male had some ghosting...actually I removed the trail ghost in post but left the wings alone. I still really liked the image so declared it a keeper, but didn't have enough of the ambient light cut out to freeze him with the flashes.

Here is the setup used or close to it. Not shot with the camera in the photo but it pretty much shows what I'm doing, and why it's hard to get a black frame ambient.

Nice setup Mike. Have you thought of placing a backdrop to get the black frame?

Yes, been thinking about adding a backdrop to get the dark frame and then add a 3rd flash to light the backdrop. Tried using the tree as the back drop but the 3rd flash pretty much just got swallowed by the tree, it didn't have enough reflective qualities to light up well with just one more flash behind the stump. Still plan to try a few more times, but I really want some kind of color vs just a black background.
