Hi everyone,
I've just returned home after spending the last five weeks photographing and guiding in Ecuador. One of the highlights for me was seeing and photographing this beautiful, male Ecuadorian Hillstar. This particular individual was defending an extensive patch of chuquiragua flowers (the nectar of which is the mainstay of their diet) at just under 4,000m. However, amazingly enough, this species has been known to inhabit areas of the Andes greater than 5,200m. Each night, they go into a state of torpor while roosting in small caves and crevices in the rocky landscape. An incredible bird!
