Anyone here using the 24-70II as their main lens?
For years I've been mainly shooting weddings with the 35L and 85L on a 5dmk2 and 5dmk3. 24L if i need wider and 50L when I need to rush the detail shots. I also rarely shoot wide open unless its portaits time or if there is a lack of light. Mainly i keep then at f2. I keep thinking I should get a 24-70 II. I'd love to see how others utillise it.

my web's www.superpandapresents.com
(its currently undergoing changes - so the main gallery and albums order is kinda messed up)

Thanks guys!

For a few years I shot with the 35, 50, 85, 100 & 70-200 on two bodies. I found myself changing out the 35 and 50 a lot depending on the scene, and at times I'd miss moments. At one wedding I tried my co-shooters 24-70 and loved it. I sold my 35 & 50 and it works much better for how I work on a wedding day. I do miss the 35 & 50, and they are by far better lenses, but the 24-70 is much more flexible for a fast moving day.

You can just stand in one spot and shoot away.

Some days I shoot 75% of the wedding with a 24-70 II — crazy sharp, snap AF (even in bad light), and great colors/bokeh. Even does close focus.

Only downside (IMO) is they killed the perfect lens hood from the legacy model. On the first gen, 24mm had the front element extended so the lens shade distance was perfect for wide angle. Then, on the 70 side, the front element would go deep inside the lens hood (ta-da!) like a 70mm prime lens hood would be. Genius. The current model, though excellent, looks more like a kit lens with it's little hood that's only optimized for 24mm (to prevent vignetting at longer focal lengths).

If you view MTF charts and dweeb stuff, wide open the 24-70L II equals or bests L primes at ƒ2.8 — sharper than the 24, 35, 50, and (almost) the 85.

Canon's best zoomer ever?

I use it for the majority of the day. During portraits I'll play with other lenses, and use the 135 on my second body when needed.

I tried one for a couple of months. Inevitably, I ended up going back to primes. Absolutely beautiful in daylight, but just didn't cut it in low light. A couple of others here did the same, but I'll let them chime in. Great every day walk around lens, of course.

haha yeah, im thinking maybe i shud sell off my 24 1.4L mk2 and get the 24-70 mk2.
I can understand how some are aghast at the thought of zooms and it may not all be due to decreased low light ability and bokeh. A part of if it is that some people just act, think and see in fixed focals. Before getting the 24L, i had the 16-35L. I used gaffer tape to make it stick to 28mm or 24mm. Because i end up "over widening" in hectic situations and end up cropping in post .

I am a massive fan of the 24-70 mk II. The IQ is amazing. I've stopped changing lenses so much at events now.

After 1 season of weddings the rubber on the zoom went loose and I was about to complain to Canon... Then I went on a surf trip to Peniche Portugal and some evil scum broke into my hire car and cleaned me out of all my fav kit; 5D3, New Sigma 50 1.4 Art.. 400mm F5.6 L... and the 24-70mk II.

I've just received a new one which seems to be just as sharp. Here's a link to the first shots I took with it. Just a commercial shoot of a bespoke outdoor bench.. Some from this set were taken with the 85mm 1.2 but most are the 24-70 II.

Here's one last hilarious bit on info regarding my robbery. They took my new iphone 6 +... I get an email last week from some Portuguese legend asking me to remove the device from my findmyphone/icloud account because they are having problems using it...

I pretty much glue one camera with the 24-70II and the other camera gets the 85II / 135L / 70-200

I use the Sig35 Art occasionally for some detail shots but 95% of the time it stays glued.

I've also experienced the rubber zoom ring start to get loose so I've been meaning to get that repaired before wedding season kicks into top gear.

I went from a 24-70 version I to a 35L and I love it. Every now and then I do miss it for just the ability to not have to change lens, but I like the 35 so much.

Currently running 35, 85II and 70-200 IS 2.8 VI, but I do think I will add a 24-70II to my bag for that JUST IN CASE moment.

I only see zooms as a backup, I used to have a 24-70 but never used it. Having 3 cameras at a time with 3 primes works well for me not to miss moments.

Finally bit the bullet and upgraded to VII at the end of last wedding season after a love/hate relationship with the VI offering. Best investment in a lens in a while. Very sharp. I am much like joosay mentioned above. the 24/70 stays on one body while the 2nd see's several len's during the day depending on whats happening and the ligting conditions.

24-70 f2,8 II all day long! + other lenses on a second body as needed. But the 24-70 stays all day- extremely useful for weddings and the quality is finally there- even for large groups- all the faces are there in sharp focus. I used to use the 35/ 85mm combo for many years but I now much prefere the combo of 24-70 + 85 or 70-200mm on a second body. Anyway, the 24-70 f2,8 II is probably the only lens I could shoot the whole wedding with.

I love mine. Wish it had IS, but you can't have it all.

I do miss my 35L (sold it to fund the 24-70), but my deliverables went way up after adding the zoom to the bag. I dont use the 50-70 range that often, but man, the 24-50 range is really great for a large majority of the day.

hmm...i still use 28-70 L and it serves me well. I keep it on most of wedding day, except when shooting detail shots like ring, flower...etc.. i pull out 100 macro (non L version). I also have 35L but i won't part it at least for now as i like the color, contrast, sharpness..etc, especially to capture the moment.
