I tried with the 1.4III TC today. Very happy with the results.

What about AF speed with vs without? That's my biggest concern and the only reason why I haven't picked up the TC. Thanks!

@ Nikol Thank you for providing the crop. It looks like that the lens is exceptional

One thing is missing

Landscape picture with focus at infinity. You migh have a few which you could share.

Thanks in advance

Dan, I found the auto focus just a bit qicker with and without the TC. The focus ring is a bit further down the lens and I need to get use to that. The circumference of the lens gets wider as you get to the lens element .My hand rests very nicely in the narrow part to support it. But to tweak the focus you have to move your hand forward to the wider part. Don't know if that makes any sense , just will take some time to adjust to it as I have small hands.

The other really noticeable thing to me is how true the colors are rendered.

As always, I tend to understand all the limitations that a particular tool that I choose to use has so that I can avoid unpleasant surprises. In other words, I try to be a human not a robot. That's all.

If anyone has a TC20III to slap on this thing I'd be really interested how it performs wide open in terms of IQ and AF speed/accuracy

Looks like the subjects when close are razor sharp! Curious how things look at subjects move further away!

Thx for those "flare" shots. It looks pretty 'artistic' when in extremis. I may have to part with my lugubriously focusing 300 f4 AF-D...

Thats the question:

The Tamron 150-600 were very sharp at close distances but inferior focused at far distance subjects. The 300 PF is probably better offering better sharpness compared with the zoom and higher contrast. I would be good if someone owning the 300 PF lens could share some pics reflecting his experience.

The TC 1.4 and 1.7 work well with the lens as it were already confirmed. But there is probably some hunting with
the TC2.0 III. The question is if this will become an issue dramatically limiting the use of the 300 PF lens and making it unusable for BIF or if it still maintains reasonable fast and precise AF with the D810.

Not taken with a TC, but several of the Nikon website 300/4 PF samples are of distant landscapes and the sharpness is still incredible. The 2.0 TC worked great on the original 300/4 if you had good light and didn't need crazy fast AF, I would expect the same or better for the 300/4 PF. Also I believe the 300/4 PF has a better T-stop than it's predecessor which should help a bit in that department.

Awesome shots folks, looks to be, as expected, at least as good as the outgoing model. I have a feeling this thread is going to cost me $2,000

Here are a couple of shots at longer distances with the 1.4 TCIII

I have no idea how far away the hawk was, but it was quite a distance. There was no post work done to the hawk file, just opened in Lightroom , default sharpening was 25. Resized for posting .

Dan - I had the 2.x III in the car today at LD14 hoping to find you.

But you were not there I guess. It looks like my 150-600 will be in BS shortly

Birdied - With the TC's on does the combo get out-of-balance ? I know that weight wise it will still be light but my question is about the ergonomics of the combo.

Hi Shreeni. The circumference of the lens widens as it extends to the lens element. Don't misunderstand me, not much , but enough that I notice. This is different for me and will take a bit to get comfortable with. With the TC added, the narrow part of is now longer . Not a problem for holding and balancing, but with small hands trying to balance and reach for the focus ring will take some getting use to.

Some people having the lens report that the VR is not consistent. It doesnt work well at 1/160 shutter speed at all and it works very well at 1/20 shutter speed. At 1/160 pictures are very unsharp for unknown reasons. This has been tested with the D810 and the D4. But even with the D810 which has less mirror slap it were very noticeable. Could this be confirmed?

No sorry, couldn't make it yesterday. Hope the action was good.

I just sold my 80-400 and sold my Tamron 150-600 before that. I really prefer primes in general but I'm really impressed with this 300mm.

I just took 6 test shots with my D810 and all were sharp at 1/160. Here is a sample:

Thank you for the pictures. They are indeed very sharp. The issue that the VR doesnt work well at 1/160 came from a German website. I will check again how this thread will develop. Anyway, picking up my 300 4.0 PF tomorrow.
