I'm so impressed by the smallest, lightest and cheapest Nikon F-mount zoom - the new version - that I bought for $85 here. I have used it on both DX and FX bodies though on FX in FX mode you can only shoot 28-55 if you don't want see four dark corners.

I still want to pick up the newest version one day. I had the older VR version and it was a crazy sharp lens.

My 18-55VRII is coming in this week and surprisingly enough, I came across this thread. This lens is not for someone who owns a D4s like me, although a got a free D3100 so I ordered a lens for it.
Looking forward to using this lens and body for travel though!

Perhaps only the inexperienced, someone like me, use it.

I used my 18-55 when I shot the Boston concert I went to. I wanted something smaller less "pro" looking than my 17-55 F2.8 hanging off my camera.. It's a nice lens just not very fast..

I have a Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS that covers the same range, so I haven't really used my 18-55 VR II a lot. I was pretty impressed by the rest numbers and similar that I saw when I bought my Nikon D5300 with the 18-55 II. It is a pretty decent lens for the cost, and for a kit lens.

I think APS-C in general is overlooked by so many, when it represents a great value. I am a former pro, but when I closed my studio I cancelled my preorder for the D800E and have been shooting only APS-C instead since then. Most of my work now goes to the web, or to an 8.5x11 portrait print. I will occasionally print up to 12x18, which is pretty reasonable for a 24 MP sensor.

Unfortunately Nikon doesn't take APS-C seriously. They make us to buy full frame just to get a reasonable sized viewfinder (the biggest problem with my D5300) or a few extra software features. No new APS-C lenses either - I wish we could use the Canon 24 mm and, 40 mm pancakes, or the new 50 mm 1.8, all small lenses at about $125 to $150 each.

Cheers! Have fun.

Nikon consumer DX entry-level bodies only have 95% viewfinder and that does suck. But I do love its compact and light size and its powerful pop-up flash which I use all the time. I believe its Live View do offer 100% if you can put it on a tripod. Normally I put it in P mode with Auto AF and I don't even look through viewfinder to compose. Here are some examples:
