I like the dot tune method too but find myself using the focus scale method more. You would probably understand it better if you tried it. IIRC it originated from Northlight Images so there is probably still a detailed description of it over there. It is very similar to dot tune but uses the focus scale instead of the dot as an indicator of LV/PDAF congruence. So you only get one value rather than the dot method which gives you a range of values from which you pick the mid point. It is a direct and fast reading and I like it for that reason.
BTW, how do you dot tune without a tripod?
