p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sigma 50-500 OS vs Tamron 150-600

Does anyone has experience with both of these lenses and if so which one is better? I currently have the Sigma 50-500 OS but I'm thinking of getting Tammy to get extra 100mm at the long end but then I'll lose it at the short end and I would like to know if it's worth the compromise.

All that I can tell you is that the Tamron exceeded my expectations and I can't see how the Sigma could possibly worth 1000.00 more.Sorry,no experience with the Sigma.

I've shot with the older Sigma 50-500 and the Tamron - I liked the Tamron better in image quality and zoom range (I never saw much use for 50mm on the Bigma)

I have the Tamron and shoot with a couple of guys who have the 150–500 Sigma (I know you asked about the 50–500 mm but I don't know if they are that different him image quality). I prefer the image of the Tamron at 500 mm than the Sigma but fine images can be had with both.

Enjoy whichever one you end up getting.

I have a Sigma 50-500 OS. I will not trade it for Tamron. The new Tamron seems ok, not better than Sigma but a lot cheaper. But you already have the Sigma.

And to me, the 50-150mm is much more useful focal range. The 600mm in Tamron is not going to buy you much. You can easily crop to get 600mm in your computer.

I find the starting FL of 50mm quite useful on Bigma because I can use it for close shots instead of constantly changing lenses.

I own both lenses as we speak.
I added the Tamron 150-600 to my gear few weeks ago.
Both lenses are great and produce sharp images by sharp photographers.
Maybe i shall start a new thread about our sharpness as photographers.....
But back to the point....
It appears that 50-500mm and 150-600mm ranges complement each other.
I miss the sigma when the subjects (Birds, Wildlife) are very too close to fit the 150mm which is 225mm on DX
Also i love the Sigma for Close focus of Butterflies.
The Tamron is amazingly sharp at 600mm even at max f.
With none of them i can harvest the full IQ potential of the D800.
Both Excel on DX bodies such as D7000, D90, D300S, D2x, D3200 did not check them yet with D7100 (waiting for the price to be right...)
I say go for it.

What is it that you like about Tamron? Is it sharper? Better built?

I think its a bit sharper at the short end,150, vrs the old Sigmas 50 end. The extra reach of the Tamron is i feel a reason alone to go for the Tamron. Some of my dislike for the Sigma may have been the AF on the Canon bodies. I really never did have any problems, issues with the Sigma. I remember the Sigma had nice built quality also. I cant remember ever using the short end of the Sigma very often. I would think people will be happy with either lens.

Thank you for all the replies. I think I'll hold on to my Sigma 50-500 OS for now unless I come across a great deal on Tamron.

I have used a borrowed Sigma 150-500 on a D5100 and have been "relatively" happy with it; however, I think - as with most lenses - IQ is a function of "the operator". So I'm not convinced that the comments of "soft" or "not so sharp" are necessarily a function of the lens. I've gotten my best shots with the Sigma at f8.0, 1/1000 and on a tripod. The lens is on the large/heavy side, if that is a consideration. I have no experience with the Tamron you reference. As says, a teleconverter is an alternative. I have used a Tamron 1.4X TC that works well with the Sigma (retains both AF and metering). I also used the TC with a Nikon 55-300mm VR. So with your current zoom and the 1.4X TC you get a resulting 147-630mm lens with a loss of about 1 - 1.5 stops and save some money; may be worth checking it out.
