p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sigma 150-600 purchase question

Hello all,
I currently have a Nikon 80-400 d (old one) and a nikon 300 f/4 afs lenses.
I am debating whether I should pick up a sigma sports 150-600 or not .
If I do, what should I get rid of ? Should I sell both 80-400 and 300 or just 80-400 and keep 300?
Anyone who has the sigma or got a chance to try the sigma, how do you compare that with the 300?
What do you think ?
All this is for birding ....
Thanks in advance!

I probably wouldn't get rid of anything until you actually have a 150-600 in hand and can compare it to your existing glass. A friend of mine is contemplating the same thing but he's waiting until my 150-600 comes in so we can put it through its paces and compare it to his 80-400G He is also a birder and is looking to see how the 600mm focal length improves upon what he can get with 400mm. If you're lucky maybe you can find one at a brick and mortar photography store close enough to you where you can try it out.

Seems to me you're going to have to risk some shipping costs to work with the Sigma 150-600mm more than a half-hour to see how you like it. And see how it compares to the 300mmf4. I haven't seen enough to know how it compares at 300mm. The Sigma will be sharper and faster AF than the old 80-400D, I can't see keeping both of them.

I don't think you can answer your questions by reading forum posts, think you're going to have to try the Sigma yourself. What someone else prefers may not be what you prefer.

The Sigma is double the weight so you may not want to hand hold. I agree with the others.

challenge is, I cant keep all three due to funds. if I sell both, buying sigma is straight forward... when I shoot, unless I am travelling and taking the lens with me, I always use a monopod. so weight might be an ok situation. Also I have the 70-200 f/2.8 . so If I rework the kit, I could keep the 70-200 f/2.8 and sell both the 80-400 and 300 f/4 and get sigma. the challenge is, 300 is such a sweet lens, I am wondering if I will be disappointed if I sell that and buy sigma as my primary and only birding lens. If it is comparable to the 300, I will gladly take it.
what do you think?

Lens Rentals has the Sigma 150-600. I know you're limited on funds, but if you can afford to drop $100 to test it out, it may end up saving you more in the long run.

It would be far less expensive for shipping both ways to try it out. I was going to add, as Morris did, the Sigma will be heavy. All their lenses are built like tanks, thus not lightweight.

You're going to be taking a noticeable hit on image quality and maximum aperture, as well as size/weight. I'd keep at least the 300/4 personally. If you're used to the IQ of the 300/4 and your 70-200/2.8, the Sigma will disappoint if you're picky. That being said, if you need 600mm, that Sigma is probably going to be the best way to get there below $2,000.

Thanks everyone for sharing your thoughts.
Sounds like the best options are :
1)rent the sigma and compare against 300 f/4 to see if I like it enough to replace both 300 and 80-400
2)sell 80-400 and get sigma. But that is going to cost me about $1400 from pocket. let me see if I can raise from funds by selling some less used stuff that I collected over the past decade or two.
that funds will come handy anyway, regardless of the option

Another question....
I know not a lot of people have gotten their hands on this lens, but any thoughts on the Contemporary version? What am I getting for the extra 1000 for the sports version?
If Contemporary is similar or better than tamron, that is a good option and I can buy easily... What do you say?

If you want more reach beyond 400mm have you thought of getting a TC for the 300mmF4 AF-S? Hard to beat the IQ of that lens even with a 1.4 or 1.7 TC, and only a few hundred dollars.

Nobody is going to like my suggestion, but have you ever thought of buying a 500mm mirror lens? I have a Nikon 500mm f/5 and an f/8. If you can take a picture without strong highlights in it, you won't get the donuts!

It's a relative cheap option, but it's manual focus.

Do you have the Sigma?
