p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Otter dead on the water?

This morning I saw this critter floating ulpside down in the water......I've not ever seen Otters in this area which lies close to the ocean and adjacent to the River feeding into the ocean.....so maybe a likely Otter habitat?

Any other ideas?

I've never seen this view, so it's not an easy ID for me, but it could possibly be either a beaver or muskrat too ~ Ron

Pretty sure it's a beaver. If you do an image search for otter you'll notice the nails do not match at all.

Here's a beaver's arm/paw for reference:

Thanks to Harry and Morris......the area where the pic was taken is a deflated coastal plain that is next to the Siuslaw River which flows into the ocean about 2 miles downstream. This time of year large parts of it are flooded due to heavy rains....I think beaver, nutria and muskrat all pose as possibilities.

But at least half the time during the year the area is dry.....

I hope no one shot it! I wish we could see the tail or face that would help ID it
