p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Canon 100-400L v I + 300L f/4 = 100-400L V II ?

I have a Canon 100-400L IS v I that I am very happy with. When the v II came out, I didn't think that I would upgrade. After reading the v II reviews, I was happy with my decision to keep what I had.

However, I was thinking a bit more about my lens line-up. I also have a great Canon 300L f/4 IS that I especially like for its close focus ability, sharpness, IQ and f/4. I see that the new 100-400 focuses much closer than the v I.

So, I could sell both my 100-400 v I and my 300 f/4 and pretty much cover the cost of a new 100-400 v II. One less large lens to carry around and still have most of my current capability, with better IS, some better overall IQ, and not be out of pocket very much if any money.

Does anyone know what f stop the new 100-400 v II is at when at 300mm? That is about the only thing that I see that I will be giving up.

Thanks for looking at one more 100-400 v I vs. v II question.

Jim

At 300mm its f/5.0 according to TDP here and also here in more detail when you scroll down a little to the first comparison chart.

Although the 100-400 II shows as f/5 at 300mm it is really closer to 5.6.
It's a fine lens and will easily replace your other lenses.

The last 100-400 mkI I just sold was a great copy optically - so close to the MkII that you had to pixel peep to discern a difference. That said, the MFD and newer IS were reason enough to upgrade.

While bench testing may suggest that versions 1 & 2 of the 100-400 are very similar optically, the new lens looks better than tests alone suggests in my hands, even for static subjects where the updated AF and IS don't have as much impact. For your work, which is anything but static, I'd think the upgrade would make lots of sense and would allow you to condense two lenses to one.

Thanks for all the inputs. Even though my v I is only about a year old, I do worry about the friction adjust since that is know weak area - so one more reason to think upgrade.

After getting a 100-400L IS (Mk I), I sold my 300/4L IS. Now I have the 100-400L IS II, and it's a worthwhile improvement over both lenses.

The Mk II has a friction ring that's very similar to the Mk I.

I've owned the older two lenses and now have the 100-400 II --- This new one is head and shoulders above version 1 in every way (IS, IQ, AF) and a bit sharper than the 300 F4 prime. The big surprise for me was to see the 100-400 II best my 400 5.6L which I have sworn by for 20 years.

Canon really hit a home-run with this lens specially at the reasonable price they released it at. I remember much speculation about this lens coming out at $3k plus and I am glad it did not.

Never had version one, but compared to the sharp prime 400/5.6 it's equal or slightly better. The real kicker is putting on the 1.4 tele III and seeing the results. I notice you have the II tele. Move up Mr. Carnac. You will not be disappointed in the new version 100-400 II. This zoom should receive "lens of the year award" For the price it's got to be the best out there.

Guess I'll need to get the "My Studio", shoot some "glamour" shots of my two lenses and get them posted on B&S.

Thanks for all the help

Jim

hmmm - next I'm considering selling by 24-70L f2.8 v I and my 24-105L IS to get the 24-70L f2.8 v II. (find that I use the 24-105 quite a bit though due to size, zoom range, and IS).

I'm not sure what you mean. The design of the ring on the 100-400 II seems rather different in that it stays put on the loose setting and takes some effort to get past a detent or something. The old design tended to tighten for no good reason. I'd still prefer two good position, loose and tight.

No experience here with the glass mentioned ... but my observation of the V II images I've seen has been that it's bokeh can be a bit jittery. Not to suggest that bokeh is uber-important, per se ... just that is the one thing that seems to be the concession in exchange for the additional sharpness (optical physics are always a series of compromises).

We see this in other "uber-sharp" glass, so it's not a defect or problem, per se ... just the laws of physics @ something to be aware of so it doesn't tick you off when it shows up for you down the road.

I mean similar in that it's a rotating ring that locks the zoom, just like the Mk I. I like the detent stop on the new one, which I think is an improvement. Most rotary-ring zoom lenses with zoom lock have a switch that secures it at the minimum focal length.. The Mk II has a lock ring which operates at any focal length - just like the Mk I.

I have 100-400 v1 and 300f4L IS, and before long will get 100-400 vII. But even then, I will insist keeping one of the older two lenses for backup on expensive African trips.

But both 100-400 are f5.6, while the 300 is f4. If you happen to own 1Dx or 5D3, f5.6 will only focus using the central 21 cross sensors. The 300 f4 will allow the use of the 20 more outer cross sensors (for a total of 41 cross sensors). I can easily see the cross sensors light up in the viewfinder, if I mount each lens on my 5D3. This might be a significant advantage, depending on how you use the cross sensors.
