hi
just bought a gitzo mountaineer series 2 tripod. now looking for a head. i do have a manfrotto gearhead, however they are heavier than i want to lug aroound. i own a nikon d800 have a 105mm 2.8 nikon lens as well as a 24-70mm 2.8, and a 70-200 mm f4.

any suggestions would be helpful.

I went through several types of ball heads, before I found one that I really like. It is the Really Right Stuff BH 55.

I can use this for my long telephoto lens or my macro lens. The lens stays where you want it and does not creep at all. The BH 55 supports the heavy telephoto lens, but they have different models depending on the weight you need to support.

I found this one very good:

Manfrotto 488RC0 Midi Ball Head with 030- 14 RC0 Rapid Connect Plate

Before I bought it I researched reviews and it ha an excellent reputation.
