Just wondering, ok, maybe venting, but why the heck would a $650 rebate be availabale in the US but not in Canada?

werid!

We get different rebates and sometimes better ones, Canada and the US are simply different marketing entities. What are you looking at buying?

After checking pricing on several high end lenses and bodies between B&H and my dealer, I found that my dealer sells for between 5% and 10% higher in Canadian dollars than B&H does in U.S. dollars. Given the current 20% exchange rate, we are actually between 10% and 15% cheaper here in Canada.

Given the current exchange rates and Canon pricing, most gears are a much better buy in Canada. Of course, there's probably a 'readjustment' due, any day now.

For example, an EF 70-200/2.8L IS II at B&H is now $2049 US (incl. rebate, before sales tax and shipping). Photoprice.ca shows more than a dozen Canadian sources selling it for $2399 CA, which is currently about $1922 US.

Also, as lowside67 mentioned, we do get decent rebates here, but they're not syched with the US market.

Yes. And then there is the CPS discount on select upper echelon gears.

I have old fingers and prefer to minimize my typing.

Because they are two different countries. Nothing weird about it.

canon 6D is what I have my sights set on.

$1,899 in canada
$1,249 in usa or $1,749 with a 24-105

a free lens? ya, that is weird. I get the market numbers...canucks pay more than americans for the same item, but a free lens, c'mon, that is ridiculously lopsided

Yeah, that's not a great deal. Maybe it'll get better.

Don't feel bad- the $1249/$1749 deal is gone for the US folks now too.

$1899 CAD should be about $1531 US so that is pretty close to the standard AD price in the US right now- which is $1799 less $300 rebate = $1499.

Speaking of the Canadian dollar, the recent decline has pretty much killed any advantage to buying used on a forum like this as most Canadian sellers are asking US funds. When you tack on the extra 20% you are usually approaching new prices. Has anyone noticed this?

If I could get the Super teles at those special prices that you'll get, Canon could keep the other rebates.

OTOH, it's a great time to sell stuff to American buyers. The exchange rate more than covers the fees on you-know-where.

No, because that is exaggerating a bit. For a start, there is plenty of used gear that is sold for far less than 20% of new prices.

And even if you buy used in US funds in Canada, you will still save any sales tax - 12% in BC.

Yes sales tax hurts, but many items are priced close to retail, especially lenses, but even items that should depreciate rapidly, like camera bags seem to sell high used. Buying used is a gamble sometimes, one you have to weigh when you calculate what you are saving. Once that savings is reduced by 20% right off the bat, maybe sales tax and buying the item new locally or even online with a warranty starts to look like the better choice. I also collect military medals and related items, and the same thing has happened there now. Anything I buy is up by 20%, or actaully more now with the dollar below 80 cents US. If you pay with Pay pal, they ding you for an even worse conversion, and then there are the fees which are most often charged to the buyer in these transactions.
