I'll play -- from a very overcast beach in Florida. I think I have posted this one before but it has been a while.

Yes the appearance of sharpness can be helped by increased contrast but you still have to have the fundamentals of sharpness correct. There are a number of nice images presented here, but the images that I perceive to be "sharp" are Arbitrage's (Canon) and Harry C's and I'm a Nikon guy. This has a little to do with how soft the light is, but more to do with the technique of the photographer, quality of lenses, focusing technique, and post processing. These were shot with a 105VR and my old D300s on an overcast day and I believe the focal point is sharp.

Hard light reveals much more texture and hence micro contrast which gives a sharp appearance - this works for some pictures and not others. In general direct low angle sun is my favourite light for it's texture, warmth and energy.

A Pine Marten taken on a typically overcast Scottish day ...... I don't believe there is a 'soft' issue here.

Tony, A great thread but, I must ask what is the difference in your two quotes Great un-soft shots and great soft- light sharp shots?

Nothing. They are both puns relating to the subject title of the thread.
