p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Ballerina

Thursday, I had the pleasure of photographing a ballerina for the first time. She was wonderful to work with, and I only hope my images did her justice. I'm still trying to figure this out, so critique is welcomed. One thing I wish I'd done differently was stepped down to about 500 ISO on the first three, but I had just come away from a lower light setting and didn't think quickly enough to adjust.

For me, photographing dancers in a portrait session like this is different from anything else I shoot. The light is different, and the way you have to pay attention to their lines. But that's just me.

I think you did this really well, esp for your first time. No. 4 should be printed huge. Just love it. I'd probably clean up the threads on top of her pointe shoe, but other than that, love it. It's really sharp for 1/50 and ISO 4000. I really like No. 2 as well.

For me, your angle of the shot doesn't work for 5 and 7. In No. 6, the Nashville sign is just too overwhelming for me. I might bring her out away from it, shoot at a shallow depth of field to give the sign a blur, and try it like that. On 1 and 3, the window frames in the BG cause a bit of a distraction for me.

My nits are just my nits. They may not even matter to you, or another photog. Overall, this is really good. I hope you do more photo shoots with her. You have a wonderful subject there!

Thank you for the helpful comments... I hope to work with her again also. The lighting in #4 was terrible indoor bulbs in a dim hallway, but we loved the stairwell. I went for black and white because I just couldn't correct the color cast... and fell in love with it.

wonderful composition. especially #4. IMO the images could use a little lighting , maybe a fill light and a strobe instead of natural (or hallway bulb) light as the main. That way you'd be able to highlight the tonality of her skin a little more

I really like #4 also but I would try to smooth the larger skin fold in her back so it's less noticeable.

Wonderful work. I really am drawn to #4 due to her strong profile, intensity, and interwoven arm and leg suggesting her passion for her art. There is no distraction from other elements.

They are all excellent. but #4 takes the cake for me, because I associate ballet to classic, old tradition, something that I feel lends itself well to B&W expression. Well done. Also, the pose/facial expression seems to show the most passion.
