Nice photos. How did you find Hwange National Park?
Thanks sibirdie. I saw more elephants in Zimbabwe than I've seen on any other safari. In Hwange, I stayed at Somalisa Acacia camp and at Little Makalolo, and heard lions calling nearing every night. At little Mak one night, we heard lions calling from multiple directions throughout most of the night, right up until wake up call. While having coffee around the fire pit before sunrise, we were discussing with the guide the lion calls and directions we thought they were coming from. We started to draw up a plan when we heard another call from straight in front of camp. We then saw the dark outline of a male lion walking to our left, it couldn't have been more than a couple of hundred yards in front of us. We momentarily froze, just looked at each other, and without saying a word, we chucked our coffee and made a bee line for the vehicle. We found that two male lions had killed a buffalo during the night, in direct view of camp!
Something else I liked about Hwange, was the ability to ditch the vehicle and just start walking. Multiple times we found what looked like very fresh lions tracks, and so we left the vehicle and started tracking them on foot. Twice we found them. Even the times we lost the tracks, and did not find them, it's an entirely different safari experience. All of the your senses are heightened when you are on foot, sometimes miles from your vehicle.
We also had several opportunities to approach a bull elephant on foot. Very very exciting!
Cheers,
