I only have around $500 for head and legs. I use a 5DMk3 and/or 7D with either the 70-200 2.8L or 100-400 Mk 2 for general use. I know $1,000 would be better but I don't have that much right now. If I actually get a tax refund I might be able to go higher but lets say budget is right around $500...I really am looking just for general purpose.

Hello,

i was recently in your position, and after much much much thinking and searching online,
i finally bought an Induro CT114 legs with the Sirui K-30x head.

I use a Canon 6d and my heaviest lens is the 70-200.
I could not be more happy about my choice!

Literally just posted this in the other Tripod thread.

In your case I'd consider some of Manfrotto's smaller legs in the same series or the MT series. There is also a Q2 ballhead if this one is too large for you, though I doubt it will be.

For a compromise my setup handles large tele birding lenses (with a 1.5kgs gimbal on top too, total weight on the tripod of 6.5 kgs) and landscapes (using the ballhead or a geared head), and I think you could do much worse than consider them, is the Manfrotto Tripod (055CXPRO4 - or PRO3 if you prefer 3 sections to 4) which weighs in at 1.7kgs and the ballhead (633g without the QR plate), Manfrotto MH054M0-Q5 (3 spirit levels, separate friction control and curved levers contoured to suit fingers & thumbs).

The tripod folds up small too for my birding trips.
