I would like to thank Larry & Team for being the guardian angels of L&D14.
Let me admit that I am not a PRO (that too first time in L&D14) & I did some shortcut lousy processing to address the lousy lighting situation through my little lens (you may visit the straight out of camera JPG files @ http://www.tiger-rider.com/Client-Galleries/BaldEagle/ )

The colors seem to be oversaturated imo. The exposures seem to be a bit over done as well. Try faster shutter speeds or less iso to help the exposures.

Thank you Herb for your kind feedback. YES, I cranked the saturation and contrast (to reduce the noise) bit high - I need to work on those files with some selective adjustments than the global.

The lighting was not ideal and I tried to recover from the shadows - ISO was bit high. So I first tried at 1/2000 then reduced it to 1/1600 & later in some in 1/1250 to reduce the ISO noise - please note that I am shooting handheld with Sigma 150-600 & D810 and mostly the morning shoot on Sunday when Sun is on the other side and Saturday in a cloudy conditions.

Howdy,

I'm glad that you had a good time at LD 14. The eagles sure put "on a show" for all of us.

Do to the various lighting conditions and the movement of the flight of the eagles, photographing at the Dam can be quite difficult. I'm not a Nikon shooter, but have heard that the D810 is a super camera.

I'm not a pro, nor do I have all the answers, but to start off, you might want to put your camera in Aperture Priority, with the f/stop wide open, ISO from 400 to 800, and over expose to the right about 2/3, and adjust to maintain a shutter speed of 1/1600 to 1/2000. These settings are a good start. You can then change them as needed after viewing the histogram and photos on the camera's LCD screen.

Some of the noise that you experienced could be from the particulate matter in the air.

Larry

Thanks again Larry for taking care of the L&D14 & Eagles. Appreciate your kind wisdom.

D810 is the best camera I can think about in good light (yes, I am biased But due to high MP, it may expose the noise in not so ideal lighting conditions - I also pushed it through NIK single tone HDR (to recover the shadow area) & cranking the Contrast & saturation.

I normally shoot it at the shutter priority mode since I am handholding and leave it to the mercy of the Auto ISO - if the lighting is not ideal, I pay the price

Don't worry too much about ISO it's still a full frame camera. I shoot with the D810 at the dam as well. I shoot in manual mode normally between 1/1600 to 1/2500 with apertures between f5.6 and f8. I then leave it in auto iso and I normally don't go above iso 1600 assuming metering doesn't get thrown off because of something in the environment. I adjust my exposure compensation which will then only affect iso base on current lighting, usually 0 to +.7. This is all with my 400mm Nikon.

If I was shooting with your Sigma at 600mm I probably wouldn't go below f/8 at 1/2000 to compensate for the extra reach. You will have to see what works best for you.

Thank you Dan for your kind wisdom.
You got an amazing 400mm Nikon - I am not that privileged enough

I normally used to push the ISO to 6400 and even go to 12800. But Saturday based on the CamRanger result, I brought Auto ISO limit down to 3200. Same way I started with 1/2000 shutter speed. Since the lighting was poor I brought it down first to 1/1600 and later to 1/1250.
I normally let the camera make the decision when it comes to metering and exposure - I normally work with the RAW file (the basic JPG out of camera is only for reference)

Camranger helped me to take some of those decisions before it is too late.

When I said Nikon 400mm I meant the 80-400. After discounts and gift cards I paid about the same as you did for that Sigma.

I saw the date on your files, I was there the following Sunday. Should have gone then for the blue skies.

Thank you Dan. Nikon 80-400 is also a great one

I was at L&D14 last weekend (17th - bad skies & 18th - blue skies but not many eagles after Larry left ~11AM(light was on the other side))

I left around noon on the 18th after the kids scared the eagles out of the trees.
